Blindspotting

Blindspotting ★★★★

I think this might be the first time I rented a video off Prime since the file I DL'd had horrible sound. I meant to watch the first half hour, get some sleep for work and then come home and watch the rest of it but I ended up watching most of the movie and losing some much needed sleep but whatever, I was pretty into this.

Tackling important racial and class issues in 2018 (police brutality, racial identity, the accelerated gentrification of the Bay Area) using this much style and comedy is a recipe for embarrassment and disaster but not only does this film manage to be watchable in spite of having to traverse a minefield the movie sets itself up for (it definitely shows in some very questionable stylistic choices but it's exciting to see a group of first time writer/directors swinging for the fences this way) but it's unexpectedly nuanced and empathetic in ways that surprised me. The spoken word stuff (especially in the end) really, really didn't work for me but it looks like I'm in the minority here and that's fine--like I loved Daveed Diggs in this entire movie and I can just imagine straight up hating the ending if I wasn't so over the moon for his performance.
