Elijah Johnston’s review published on Letterboxd:
Set in Boston, filmed in New Orleans, able to be substituted for anywhere- this is a mob movie about broken social orders and the alienation of poor white people in the aftermath of economic meltdown. there’s no glamour or fun in this crime- even Ray Liotta, the great hero of Fun Gangster Movies, is just another loser playing cards out of his mobile home.
loses some points because i sort of thought it would be an action movie. gains some points for having Brad Pitt as the lead and being buried so deep into the film. the ending is a dark and fascinating comment on the dejection of so many in the face of being promised change and opportunity.
