Awesome! And by awesome I mean terrible.
What an absolutely magnificent film on every single level. I enjoyed The Rider, but Chloe Zhao has grown by leaps and bounds to bring us this. I already knew that Frances McDormand is one of the finest actors of our time, but this might be her most beautiful performance ever, with unbelievable depth commanding every moment she's visible. All of the cast (mostly non actors) were stunning, but I was particularly moved by Bob Wells.
I find it unthinkable that this won't be best picture. Not only is it an incredible film, it's also exactly the right film for right now.
Wow! I loved this movie so much more than I expected to. The composition of nearly every shot is just gorgeous. The plotting is brilliant.
I thought the scene where they argue the story of Orpheus and Eurydice followed by the bonfire/singing and the cave couldn't have been more perfect. How appropriate that Marianne's revelation/surrender is framed with one of the most stark representations of the oppression of women, abortion.
