    Godzilla Singular Point

Second viewing - this time with English dubs.

Visually spectacular. Wonderfully designed. Unfortunately underdeveloped (character-wise).

More thoughts here and on next week's episode of Monsters vs. Men.

There should be a genre of film made just for me: long, slow, boring, and full of the grief that can't be named and is never resolved.

Also, call me pretentious, but damn: I can listen to Shakespeare sonnets accompanied by Ludovico Einaudi all day.

  • You Can Succeed, Too

    You Can Succeed, Too

Despite the limited musical variety and a dragging middle third, this is quite a fun and different Toho flick!

The performances, the musical numbers, and the satirical comedy all come together to make this work. If you are familiar with Shows Godzilla/Toho, you'll recognize several faces including Frankie Sakai (Mothra) who absolutely steals the show.

  • Godzilla vs. Kong

    Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong is essentially a Kong movie because its Kong’s story and that’s okay. It’s a mostly visual film with an absolutely off-the-wall plot (think Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah levels of absurdity) and characters, who despite having clear motivations, don’t develop in particularly meaningful ways. Even Jia, arguably the most important character besides Kong, is hardly more than a reflection of Kong’s own character and story. But again, this is okay.

For me, this film didn’t need to present…

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron

    Avengers: Age of Ultron

My Thoughts: I like the idea of Ultron and Vision being two versions of the same God: chaos and order. Vision may be naive (he was only born yesterday), but his character seems more realized in retrospect after watching most of Wandavision. Wish this movie wasn't quite so long. It could probably do without quite so many one-liners as well, but I do like the ongoing queries into Thor's hammer. 3/5.

Her Thoughts: I can't quite remember because it took…

  • Guardians of the Galaxy

    Guardians of the Galaxy

My Thoughts: I don't know if this one holds up as well as I remember and it's only been 6 years. I defend CGI use a lot of the time, but here, it just bore me. Drax humor is my favorite humor. 3/5.

Her Thoughts: This one is really fun. I liked it more than I expected to. 4/5
My wife and I have decided to watch the Marvel MCU. She's never seen any of the films and I've watched once before. I wanted to chronicle the journey here for fun.

    Kong: Skull Island

I actually don't think this falls into the trap of having too many characters because it is essentially an island adventure horror film. The fact that we get to know and care about the side characters is actually really impressive.

Where the film might falter is in finding its leads...

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier

    Captain America: The Winter Soldier

My Thoughts: With lots of twists and turns throughout and some of my favorite action I've seen so far, this is one of the better movies from the franchise. I think there is an attempt to build at something meaningful as well, but I don't love pushing a big governmental conspiracy in this age of QAnon.

Her Thoughts: I really liked this one. I'm already forgetting some of the earlier movies we watched, but I know this one is really…

  • Thor: The Dark World

    Thor: The Dark World

My Thoughts: I know this is one of the hated MCU films, but I kind of dig it, especially when Loki takes center stage. It fully embraces its fantasy element, even more so than the original, but that works better for me here because of world building.

Her Thoughts: I wish it focused more on the human stuff. 3/5

  • Iron Man 3

    Iron Man 3

My Thoughts: This one is kind of a mess to be honest. It's a movie that feels like it's jamming every cool idea into one incoherent story. I did like the 80s action movie vibe, but it ultimately makes light of the PTSD storyline which I think could have been the most interesting part but is unfortunately left in the wake of a hundred Iron Men. 2.5/5.

Her Thoughts: i didn't like the story as much. It felt jumbled. I…

  • King Kong

    King Kong

I’m tempted to say that King Kong 1933 was an action movie with characters but this is a character movie with action, but that’ wouldn’t be true because this is also, at its heart, a popcorn action flick, full of wonder and awe and spectacle. I say that about the characters though because they are more embodied here, more believable and relatable. Ann, for example, becomes less of a damsel and more of a conscious backbone.

    The action, for the…
