antonio’s review published on Letterboxd:
if this had fully embraced being a musical about elton’s psyche and not clung to the tired music biopic formula, it would have been a masterpiece.
EDIT: because I have more thoughts.
unlike other music biopics, this film genuinely has a core. this is a film about a man’s self-loathing, childhood abuse and lonlieness, and desperate need to be loved. and how he finally finds the love he needed as a child in himself. there’s genuinely such value and beauty in that.
hopefully they’ll turn this into a surreal onstage jukebox musical in 10 years
