Ben’s review published on Letterboxd:
Ready Player One is one of my favorite books of all time. I mean, the simple premise that you could get the entire world to compete in a scavenger hunt is enticing enough, but when you throw in all the pop culture and 80’s references it made it just that much better.
The movie is not the book. It takes the bare bones plot and runs in an entirely different direction. The movie is a completely different story and that’s okay. I knew going in, when I saw it in theaters way back, that it would be different, but, it’s still fun.
It’s a fun movie from start to finish, has some amazing attention to detail, and gets a little emotional at times. It’s not perfect, but it’s just great to see one of my favorites on the screen.
There are many reasons that people don’t like this film, and some are valid, but most feel petty. That’s okay, we all gotta be petty every now and then and we all get to like what we like. I like this shit.
