Really great with what Ozu can do with capturing such impactful moments of emotion through contrasting them with the overall stasis and structure of his visual language. It’s truly a masterclass in allowing the picture speak for itself and these shots really speak volumes on capturing both a capsule in Japanese postwar history and remaining anxieties and general social-personal implications of the “unmarried woman” that still remains. While I really just was put off by her solely named reason not to marry, the overall movie is just very well made and Setsuko Hara gives a great performance.

surprisingly so endearing and also surprisingly good chemistry between the two leads! the only part that really derailed it all was the way everything was resolved by the end....
