The Killer ★★★★½

Some of the parallels are a bit too neat as is the rectangle of male friendship that carries the film (poor Sally Yeh so memorable under Tsui Hark’s hands is little more than a dramatic prop here), but the film sheer intensity just carry it along with Danny Lee (HK’s 80s/90’s cinema official cop) reaction shots as he falls more and more in love with Chow. My favorite throwaway bit on the film is when he tells Chu Kong that he wishes he had a friend like him and the scene written as fully straightforward cop says what is needed in an interrogation scene while Lee eyes sell the actual longing. The final 45 minutes rank among the greatest male weepies.
