one of the great movies about the Final Moments and collective trauma. lee wields time in this to devastating effect, stretching it to absorb as many details as possible (the motions of a loved ones embrace, the texture of their sweat) before reality eventually constricts it. soon there won't be any to remember, your dreamy relief and longing infected by all your pain and regret. the things you hate are the things you'll miss. bad luck.
As a lover of Spike Lee Joints I was always hesitant of 25th Hour. Sure I love Edward Norton whether he's playing Smoochy or a Neo Nazi but a Spike Lee movie with a mostly white cast kept me skeptical. While I still haven't found out what motivated Lee to make it, I'm very glad he did. The film follows Monty, a former drug dealer, on his last free night before going to prison for 7 years. What do you do on your last day of freedom? You cannot undo the past. The mistakes done are irreparable. Hence a future filled with pain lies ahead. It is easy to give up. But there comes the stunner of a redemptive climax. You need to go ahead and face it with courage and determination. Otherwise, some years down the lane, you would be wondering, life could have been so different if you had the backbone to endure the difficulties. And if you did dig out of the shit, then you can have the satisfaction of saying"THIS LIFE CAME SO CLOSE TO NEVER HAPPENING."
Spike lee never disappoints and Norton is just amazing. This film is sadly poetic and profanely eloquent. I will watch this many more times in the years to come. One of the best redemption films out there.

Edward Norton is one of my favourite actors of all time and I’ve wanted to watch this film for so long because of him. I also watched Do The Right Thing for the first time earlier this year and absolutely loved it raising my expectations for this even higher. So it’s fair to say I was excited to finally watch this film but what I wasn’t expecting was my expectations to be surpassed. I fucking loved it.

In my opinion, this superb film is not only Spike Lee's greatest achievement, it also contains Edward Norton's finest performance to date.
Not to mention an incredible supporting cast all at the very top of their game, cinematography second to none and a perfectly tailored soundtrack to boot.
It has a look and feel all it's own, due in no small part to it being the first major motion picture to be filmed on location in New York City post 9/11 and as a result, a uniquely sombre mood which fits the story and it's main character's situation like a glove.
I had not long returned home from a week's stay in New York when I first saw this in 2004 and having fallen in love with the place, I found the way it was depicted here particularly moving. It really got to me at the time.
And that ending........simply unforgettable.

The whole film envelops you in its melancholic post-9/11 atmosphere, & keeps you hooked with a spectacular cast, terrific direction, gorgeous cinematography & a beautiful score.

Such a great concept, and it's seemingly overflowing with themes and ideas bubbling beneath the overly-stylish surface: toxic masculinity, systemic racism, privilege, 9/11, pedophilia, the list goes on.
I am finding that the more I reflect on it, the more depth seems to have been present than I initially realized. There are all kinds of nuggets of wisdom woven into the dialogue, something that suggests there is a thorough exploration of these many themes hiding in this film, but the end result feels like a bit of a mess. Like a gentle stream, only not. An elegy for the lost boys of New York and for the lovers with nowhere to go. Has Brian Cox ever been so salaciously engrossing? His voice!!!!!
Imagine how much better the movie would be without Anna Paquin... we could easily bump it that final half star.
Probably the best/my favorite 9/11 movie I've seen. Spike captures the mood of America and NYC so well right after the attacks. Frustration, uncertainties, acceptance that things have changed forever. Monty is a good person at heart, who got caught up in the wrong things, and is now dealt with facing the reality of his actions. Forcing to look inward, self-reflect and be accountable, similar to what America had to do after the attacks (to a certain degree).

First half of it was boring but when I get the idea that this is not a usual movie, this is a bookie, it got way better. Watch it like it is a book.
A year later, it feels even more like those last days before I left London and had to face the pandemic but now it also feels so much more hopeful than any future it predicts in that sort of situation and in the fallout of 9/11 that it was made during.
