Have been wanting to rewatch this movie for a few years and I’m so glad I finally did. Near perfect. Didn’t realize how quietly influential it was to me. Kevin Kline is so obviously the standout star of this movie that it’s wild we didn’t get countless copies of this film and this type of character for the next few years. Everything he does is funny. Michael Palin and John Cleese and Jamie Lee Curtis are having some much fun here. Tom Georgeson plays a character named George Thomason and that is worth an extra entire star.
@johncleese hi. i am writing to let you know that i think it is very bold (loaded term) to give your character cary grant’s birth name (archie leach) and then cast yourself as said character. i do not think you should have done this! why not let kevin kline, the true star of the show, shoulder the weighty honor of cary’s name?
@kevinkline i am dedicating this, my 2000th logged film, to you and your deservedly oscar-winning comedic performance. to me, you are the true archie leach 🐠
i was in the shittiest mood so i decided to watch one of the funniest films i’ve ever seen
I've decided to spend my Christmas break rewatching a lot of 80s films, all of which so far have been American.
A Fish Called Wanda isn't American. Well, it's a bit American. Not just because it's got Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis in it, but because it was mostly funded by MGM. This was made back in the 80s when the British film industry had about 76p to spend on films, after all, so we needed some help with it.
It also doesn't feel like an 80s film. In fact, it really doesn't feel like it's aged that much at all. Strange, really. It's also still incredibly funny and you can always tell when someone in a comedy film…
“I love robbing the English – they’re so polite!”
One of the finest comedies ever made. Cleese and Palin deliver Python trumping performances, and Kevin Kline is simply fucking outstanding. I cant put it any more eloquently. One of the few Oscars given for a comedy performance? That I can recall anyway.
The only minor disappointment is that Cleese and Palin only get to share one scene together, near the end. But hey!
Great script. Great Performances, and some great editing from the veteran Crichton. He bowed out on a high.
SU-FUCKING-PERB.
Cast, script and direction all just seem to reach perfection in this film. It also mixes and matches British and American humour perfectly, without resorting to cheap, crass, done to death comedy.
This is, for all intents and purposes, Cleese's film. He wrote the story, co wrote the screenplay and plays the lead. Cleese has great understanding of comedy. He is one of the few who is naturally funny, with perfect timing. Here he shows he isn't a bad actor either as he manages to not only be funny, but he also gives his character the necessary humanity we need to identify with him.
The comedy here comes from a wonderful plot, filled with fantastic characters. Of course Kevin Kline…
A Fish Called Wanda. 1988. Directed by Charles Crichton.
Nostalgia viewing:
The meticulous plotting of this farce is so much fun. Every character is amazing. Though probably the most dastardly, Kevin Kline's Otto is a personal favourite because of his proto-hipster pseudo intellectualism. The steamroller scene might be among the best cinematic comedy scenes ever. Like a lot of comedies, some parts have not aged that well, but a lot of these fumbles are easy to acknowledge and then look past.
Kevin Kline: Oscar Winner for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
A Fish Called Wanda is a heist comedy which subscribes to the classic adage of anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. It’s written by and stars John Cleese as a barrister named Archie Leach (Cary Grant's real name) and features a cast which also comprises of Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Palin and Kevin Kline. It contains a few memorable scenes and is smart enough to demonstrate that it adequately understands that it would be a misstep to surrender to the turmoil entirely.
Directed by Charles Crichton (The Lavender Hill Mob), the film succeeds in being a basis of fun and laughter mostly as a consequence of its witty script, which arranges it's events so that they develop in unsuspecting directions for the characters. Cleese is particularly delightful as he repeatedly plunges further into awkward predicaments and then attempts to climb to the surface. A Fish Called Wanda largely achieves in being an entertaining and humorous movie.
“I’ve worn skirts with higher IQ’s with you!” Is such an underrated insults and I can’t wait to use it in the future.
"You pompous, stuck-up, snot-nosed, English, giant, twerp, scumbag, fuck-face, dickhead, asshole!" remains the greatest insult in film
Fuck off, pigs.
John Cleese to two policemen. John Cleese said fuck the police! In 1988!
Had to watch it again because the first time my mother kept saying “a cinematic masterpiece” every five minutes and I lost some bits.
Funnier now that I got everything!
Really fun, really silly. Kevin Kline is doing the *most* here and it totally works for me. A really wild, weird little caper with a phenomenal cast.
what an amazing comedy starring the first milf, jamie lee curtis, and the first himbo, kevin kline. it makes me nostalgic for a time i wasn’t even alive to experience.... love it
This is the movie that all the old people in your life recommend and claim is peak comedy, and you don’t believe them because your sense of humor rarely aligns with theirs but then you watch it, swallow your pride and choose fun.
I will never doubt John Clesse
the actual best movie ever written jamie lee curtis Thank You For Your Service
"can you tell the pigs to fuck off"
"okay, fuck off, pigs"
very impressive to steal a movie that two members of monty python also star in, but kevin kline does it. he also gets to tell michael palin “I love watching your ass when you walk. Is that beautiful or what? Don't go near him, he's mine” which is delightful and was probably ad-libbed.
Pretty sure John Cleese wrote this just so he could make out with Jamie Lee Curtis.
And that's fair.
Hilarious and brilliant script. Michael Palin is my favourite human being, and Jamie Lee Curtis is a fox. Possibly top 10 films of all time personally.
