This is the third animated film exhibited at the opening of Charles-Emile- Reynaud's Theatre Optique. It is a lost film, which is a damn shame, because I would have liked to see more work in the tradition of Pauvre Pierrot.

Lost to the waters of Seine, unfortunately. Though as far as film demises goes, that's a bit more poetic.

I don’t care that this film is lost. I love this poster so much, holy shit. Also? Reynaud is the most French artist ever. Threw his films into the Seine because he was sure no one would want to see his movies. Also! This is not a good translation - a “Bock” is a type of beer! A very specific dark beer.

This good beer would be followed by many depressing ones. By 1910, Reynaud’s work was so forgotton, he figured nobody would notice or care if he tossed his work into the Seine.
Irony being what it is, he apparently missed a few frames, which were discovered many many years after his death, digitized, and are now seen by film students the world over. We all wish he had just stuffed his work in a box and put it away to be discovered by us later. We’d all like to raise a bon bock to Un Bon Bock!

Another pioneering work of almost prehistorical animated movies, lost forever because its creator Émile Reynaud threw it into the Seine. If anybody in France reads this, please look in any nearby rivers for priceless lost films, thank you.

The last of the French animated short films that Emile Reynaud presented at his Cabinet fantastique at the Musee Grevin in 1892. Once again, a lost film that Reynaud threw into the Seine river. Interesting that he was suffering from depression at the moment.
The English title for Un bon bock is A Good Beer. The plot of the film involved a wanderer entering a cabaret in the countryside and asking for a beer to a beautiful waitress. She comes back with the pint, and the wanderer began to court her. Meanwhile, the kitchen boy comes, drinks the beer, and vanishes. The wanderer asks for another beer. Just then, a traveler entered and has an argument with the wanderer. As…
