This film feels exactly like the time it start pissing down as I was descending Bwlch yr Oernant on the A542 after sweating for 40 miles, and just as I got near the bottom a car sped past and splashed horseshit on me. I mean all this as a compliment.
no bloody seriously you have to watch it, just amazing!
small tip read about where the whole race is happening and also some small infos , nothing special , wiki has every info!!!
drink whatever you want, this people are artists! not athlets!
spoiler alert: the winner of the 1976 paris-roubaix was the abominable march of capital, who left its fierce competitor, the striking workers, consigned to a dusty hell. vive la lutte finale!!
A rare 70s sports doc devoid of the adoration of machismo and raw physicality, trains the eye on the romanticism of submitting yourself to fail and be broken down as a pre-requisite to compete. there's generally a lot of classicism in these races and a lot of the exploration of it is exhausting - not the case here.
Say what you want about men in tight shorts but I dare you to watch this and then not call cycling an extreme sport
From poetic & dramatic to fun & sometimes outright comedic. A Sunday in Hell is a really essential documentary for cycling lovers and a neat watch for everyone else!
The title A Sunday in Hell could be the title of your average horror flick, but in reality it is a documentary about a cycling race, and arguably more horrifying than your average horror flick.
As a big fan of Paris-Roubaix - it being my favourite sports event i watch every year since i'm little - after discovering they made a movie about this, i wanted to see this, especially since I was never able to taste a bit from earlier editions before I was born, except for a few highlights, so this was an interesting journey into one of those earlier editions, to taste the atmosphere, and a lot of names that i've heard about or do know are…
I watched this time with Jorgen Leth's commentary. Leth excels at being the narrator here - after all, he has co-commentated on many Tour de France events but in measuring him to the delivery of David Saunders in the English dub, he misses some of the crispness in the delivery. Not to mean any disrespect but it's things you notice when you've watched the film with a different dub. I could easily watch this film though a million times with different dubbing (I guarantee I'd watch this is Dutch or French without missing a beat. Paris-Roubaix has been deemed "a beautiful love and a wrecking disease at the same time," and to see Merckx, De Vlaeminck ("in de tijd van Roger een beetje sneeuw was niets"), Moser et al is quite something. So much as changed in the world of cycling but it is still awe-inducing watching this film.
