imagine going over to ricky's house for a dime bag and he's just sitting there watching a video he recorded of a dead cat in a dumpster or something and he senses your presence and says "i watch this every day at exactly 3:41pm. it reminds me that i'm not alone in the world" and then he starts crying and you're just like "ricky... the weed"
I'd fuck daddy Kevin Spacey in an instant 🌹
UPDATE: This didn't age well. 😂
I feel like I've been in a coma for the past twenty years. And I'm just now waking up.
What is your purpose in life? How do you see yourself? How do you interact with other people? Is your life turning into one big routine?
This film teaches you how to look closer at life, discover new things, and have a better understanding and appreciation of human nature. Never judge a book by its cover; there is always much more hidden underneath the surface.
Triumphs in all areas. We can all learn something from this film.
An amazingly inspirational piece with a stunning score from Thomas Newman. Sam Mendes does us proud.
lana del rey watched this and went "yep, i'm gonna base my career off of angela hayes"
Janie, today I quit my job. And then I told my boss to go fuck himself, and then I blackmailed him for almost sixty thousand dollars. Pass the asparagus.
Watched with friends, had to show em for the first time. Conflicting, yes, but there are so many reasons for why I often tie this with FMF for my fav of all time. Hits hard, changed how I looked at film, first film that ever seemed to just dive into my mind and get me to try to understand everything about myself.
*mastapiece*
Not long after this came out my father became quite enraged with me, shouting at me in a restaurant, because he'd loved it and I, very convinced of my white hot takes as a barely 21-year-old film student, smugly proclaimed that if this was really up to something then Lester would actually have gone ahead and fucked that neighbor girl. Now, I'm not saying I wasn't a little bit full of shit there, but I remain just as smugly proud of both that moment and my assessment. In my defense the movie is just as simplistic and pleased with itself.
Holy shit, American Beauty is the real deal! Directed by Sam Mendes and starring Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley and Mena Suvari, the story follows a sexually frustrated suburban father who has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend, whilst his wife cheats on him and daughter develops a new relationship with the boy next door.
What an incredible first watch this turned out to be! The film itself defies the usual tropes of the genre, gets under your skin in ways you can't anticipate and then works its way straight toward the heart during its closing moments. The performances and direction within are nothing short of masterful. Kevin Spacey, whilst not exactly…
perfect screen-writing. this movie has helped me through my darkest days. the cut out scene in the end is totally necessary since i’d go down to a spiral if it was included. minus one star for using the lolita-inspired relationship as an audience bait eventhough the theme of the movie is clearly much deeper than that. also why would you use that for a bait? gross.
Such an impressive directorial debut from Sam Mendes - he manages the tone of the material really well and gets such good performances out of the cast. Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would!
We’re all suffering from the Mandela effect here thinking at one time this was great when it’s actually weird as fuck
I don't think I have ever viscerally hated a film more. I mean, it ticks my two biggest "I hate this in any media" boxes in the absolute biggest way, with a couple of "major irk" boxes. The literal only thing I can think of positively about this film is the gay couple, and even then IMDb Trivia says they were meant to be the most boring people in the film but ruddy hell, come on.
Screw you, Kick-Ass, for guilting me into watching this next.
