this movie: "dedicated to andrei tarkovsky"
me: andrei sweetie im literally so sorry im so sorry this ugly ass bitch would even say that. oh my god.
i have a very weird relationship with lars von trier, as all of us do i think. i fucking hate his movies, but i actually don't, but i really do, but not really and i can't stop watching them when i really should but i really don't want to but i really do and it's all just......... wack
You can say alot of things about lars von trier both good and bad but you can never say he didn't serve up enough provocative portions of psychological gobbledygook to keep us chewing on our cud for days on end!
The opening scene in black and white is unbearably beautiful! If you look at it too long your retinas will surely fry for they have never been ravaged by such exquisite imagery!
The slo mo acts of unbridled amour accompanied by the intensely haunting aria Lascia ch'io pianga have been seared into your memory, the branding iron still stinks of burnt flesh! The other shoe falls an innocent young life is taken! You hear the sizzle as the iron finds…
So.....I guess von Trier took the whole 'torture porn' thing too literally.
I can take the pretentiousness and can forgive the self-indulgent ramblings and thickly laid on self-importance.
I can even stand the yucky bits.
What I can't stand is the shallow, cold and completely unengaging treatment of its potentially intriguing subject matter.
“Nature is Satan's church.”

Over on the Internet Movie Database, someone once described Lars Von Trier as, and I quote, ‘an arty wanker’.
Now, although that is perhaps the most unsophisticated and rudimentary way of expressing it, they did have a point. It isn’t hard to see why Trier could be considered pretentious, especially with his most controversial outing yet, Antichrist.
To say it is unforgettable is a gross understatement. Rather, for better or worse, it sears itself into your subconscious, tapping its way into your most deep seated fears. It is a film that will astonish and infuriate in equal measure, a film that cannot be simply watched, but felt. The exact emotions felt will…
Dear Lars von Trier,
Hello incel, first I wanted to say fuck you for dedicating this pretentious ass movie to Andrei Tarkovsky, I hate you for that. Also, thank you so much for reminding me that women are either hysterical or evil. And yes, good thinking, you can trick people into thinking a sequence is good by making it black and white and slow-mo while random classical music plays, nice touch. Also, I have to compliment you for making a completely meandering and pointless film that is so confused and directionless it made me angry. But hey, it’s ok I forgive you because that penis squirting blood scene was top notch. So far I hate your work.
Sincerely,
Your #1 Fan

To preface I’ve never been a huge fan of Lars von Trier. His trolling, disingenuous films have often kept me at a distance; on top of the fact that his clear misogyny in his demonization of women in disconcerting at best.
But he rather impressed me with Melancholia, even though these criticisms were still valid with that film. But his blatant pretentiousness mixed with his nihilism was kind of...infectious?
So I prepared myself for Antichrist, which has been considered sickeningly brutal and hard to watch.
And while is that and so much more, it’s also a tale of the callousness, meaninglessness and chaos of nature. On top of an examination of grief with echoes of Freud, and gender complexes and…
Exposure. That's the only thing that works. Everything else is just talk. You have to have to courage to stay in the situation that frightens. And then you'll learn that fear isn't dangerous.
I understand Lars Von Trier’s ‘genius’. But, after three attempts, I don’t think I can appreciate its greatness. And I don’t think I ever will.
Sickening and horrific yet disturbingly beautiful. Antichrist is quite possibly the most emotionally draining thing I’ve ever watched
I think it is difficult to leave a film and feel like you have seen something affecting life and depicting it in a realistic way — especially the darkest sides. But I felt the absolute desolate isolation of depression and grief in this film. It is obvious that when you watch a von Trier film, you are seeing inside his brain and watching a painting come to life.
Disturbing. Very disturbing. Unusual. Very unusual. I will not ever rewatch this and sort of wish I would not have watched this. But I like a lot of this directors work so I wanted to see it. Also so many rated it so highly. I do like the art house facets of it and film style and score and acting was excellent. Subject matter was just upsetting.
