"Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and things with... molecular structures."
Bruce fucking Campbell.
Though it may not exactly be what some wanted as a finale to the Evil Dead series, Army of Darkness to me ultimately is an absolute impeccable and downright exuberant feature that favorably ditches most of the horror elements of its direct predecessors and goes for a more fantasy-action-comedy approach that in doing so unquestionably makes for one of the most delightfully fun and infinitely quotable films ever made.
The extensive change of overall tone and also setting naturally give Army of Darkness a much-needed boost to be entirely distinct from the two prior films before it, and in the end, it admirably works out just fine all the way through especially for Bruce Campbell who once again manages to deliver yet another unequivocally top-of-the-line performance as the titular hero known as Ash Williams in this.
This film concludes a horror franchise I consider to be one of the greatest ever conceived.
It is the trilogy's Santa Claus, adding joy, merriment and laughter.
And chainsaws.
And Deadites.
And time travel.
And cloning.
And magic.
Ok, so it's nothing like Santa at all, but you get my point.
Oh, and I'm so proud! I managed to do this without one quote!
Groovy!
....bollocks....

An atmospheric blast of old-school adventure and classical horror, Army of Darkness is a wacky example of distinct energy and grotesque low-budget beauty. Castles, skeletons, fog, and monsters; every trope adds to a modern reinvention of palpable mood and thrilling escapades. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are one of the great director/actor duos.
“Well hello Mr Fancypants. Well, I’ve got news for you pal, you ain’t leadin but two things, right now: Jack and shit... and Jack left town.”
Name a better trilogy. I’ll wait.
A perfect, hilarious end to one of the greatest trilogies of all time. Sam Raimi is such an inspiration. The effects in this film are stunning and fascinating and the ideas are creative and imaginitive. Most of all, it's hysterical; the ridiculously goofy, campy, awesome zombies' use of modern slang like, "you're going down," in 1300 A.D. I used to think that this was the weakest in the trilogy, and maybe it is because I consider the first two to be masterful works of pure inventiveness, but I'm starting to think that Army of Darkness may be just as good. The best one liners. Raimi unhinged, in his purest form. Much credit to Ivan Raimi as well and of course, the Man, Mr. Campbell. "Groovy."
Ash cranks the one-liners up a notch and unleashes his true potential in order to survive an outrageous trip back in time.
By far the silliest and most light-hearted entry in Sam Raimi's cult classic Evil Dead trilogy, Army of Darkness sees Bruce Campbell returning as hunky smart ass Ash Williams to fight the Deadites in a medieval setting. Although it suffers from a little jet lag toward the end, there are more than enough screwball thrills and memorable one-liners on display to make up for it. Fun, care-free, and endlessly re-watchable, Army of Darkness remains an enduring remnant of my misspent youth. Hail to the king, baby!
Throwing out the horror and doubling down on the groovy, Army of Darkness displays Raimi’s youthful impulses working at maximum capacity, showcasing some of the most technically bewildering camera-movements of the entire trilogy. Nothing compares to the bloody carnage that is Evil Dead II, and although the excessive style and bombardment of one-liners feel slightly regurgitated, the dive into Python-esque fantasy is a surprisingly fresh take on the mythology created in the first two films. I wasn’t bored for a second, the range of jaw-dropping practical effects in the final set-piece feeling in many ways like a major influence on The Lord of the Rings saga, which would make sense considering Jackson’s seasoned background in slashers. This is clearly where the look of those orcs and sweeping one-takes came from, faultless stop-motion and cheesy adventure-fare giving it its trademark Evil Dead edge. Few films are this fun, and this is quite possibly Bruce Campbell at his best. Hail to the king!
HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!
Man, does Sam Raimi knows how to do a trilogy or what?? This movie rules.
wish it was a lil more horror-y and a bit less slapstick. but it’s still a lot of fun. and it just looks like the skeleton army at the end is having such a good time. good for them.
What a absolutely charming and fun movie. Bruce Campbell is just giving it his all and you've got to respect him for that. All the effects are goofy enough where you don't care if they look a little cheap. It's probably the silliest the 'Evil Dead' series will ever get but I believe this the most important entrie, with this being where Ash's character truly becomes the icon he is now. A must see classic along with both of the films that precede it.
7-8/10
Campbell: “To whoever’s watching, I’ll give you three guesses as to who threw the dirt on my face in this scene”
Raimi: “hehehehe”
*Commentary with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell
