Lesson: How Not To Write Dialogue
Aaron Eckhart: Commanding Anonymous Morons
Cliche: The Movie
Exposition: It's Everywhere
Michelle Rodriguez: Best Thing About This Movie
Second Act: Better Than The First
ADHD: The Editor
Michael Pena: Can't Save This
Reminder: Of Everything That Is Happening Every 10 Seconds Via Dialogue.
Call of Duty: Is More Fulfilling
Moments: Some Aren't Bad
Third Act: Better Than First Two
Guilty Pleasure: Possibly?
Terrible Movie: Definitely
This movie is a must-see masterpiece. It clearly is a glorious parable of the follies of ignoring third world countries. The great alien invasion, choosing the gluttonous LA as its target, is full of coherent action and an amazing subliminal message.
Aaron Eckhart surpasses his flat role in the Dark Knight as a completely three dimensional Sr. Sergeant in the US Marines. His lines, consisting of barking orders at his subordinates, clearly reflect an interior conflict that he is having between loyalty to his country and temptation to join the aliens. Much like the temptation of Christ in the wilderness. A beautiful comparison that surpasses the greatest art house films.

Just watch the trailer again......vastly more entertaining than the final result.
And it's shorter.
Which is good.
As with many American blockbusters of this ilk Battle: Los Angeles is big, brash and dumb. Sadly it is also a humourless bore making the gung-ho patriotism hard to swallow. Expecting originality or characters with depth is probably too much to ask but exciting and well choreographed action should come as standard. Sadly this is largely absent here with predictable set pieces and an over reliance on shaky cam footage. Rather than creating a documentary-like aesthetic it just comes across as bad filmmaking as it neither adds to the tension or sense of reality.
The film focuses on far too many characters for you to possibly care about (the fact that they are little more than walking talking clichés certainly…
A solid, if recognizable, war picture collides with a capable disaster epic to effective results in "Battle: Los Angeles," Jonathan Liebesman's science fiction trek through a ravaged LA. Focusing more on the grunts on the ground then the menace from the skies, the film rumbles forward as a group of soldiers attempts to shuttle civilians to safety while alien invaders rampage through the cities of Earth. Served by a heavy tone and an engaging sense of self, the film moves quickly yet thunderously through satisfyingly constructed set-pieces. This is a robust genre outing.
Aliens invading off the California coast activate marines out of Camp Pendleton as a particular platoon scours a ruined Santa Monica to recover survivors before the area is leveled by air.
Plucky military sci-fi that skirts along its own genericness with a dependable Aaron Eckhart, impressive action sequences, and fly-on-the-wall combat drama. The biomechanical aliens are most interesting; resembling human-sized footsoldiers of the monstrosity in Antonio Margheriti's Alien from the Deep (1989). Their cantankerous drone aircraft and tanks look modeled after the war machines of the Metal Slug video games. Shame we'll never see more of them; weak box office tanked plans for a globetrotting multi-film franchise (sequel would've been set in Paris and so on). Watched via Sony's Blu-ray.

I was hoping to get a little enjoyment out of this as a really fucking dumb action sci-fi where aliens get shot to fuck. And while it is really fucking dumb (so fucking dumb), and aliens get shot to fuck, I got no enjoyment out of this unfortunately.
First the characters, or lack thereof. Seriously, I watched this yesterday and can't name a single character from it. I will say, the only reason this doesn't get a 1-star (or worse) is because Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez totally buy into this shit and give good performances with the shit material they're given.
Now, even with the lack…
To quote my previous review:
Sometimes I want cheese. Big and bombastic cheese with a plot thinner than a tiny mint wafer and with emotions that are thrust in your face execution style.
And best of all? No humor. No stupid jokes. No characters goofing off in the face of imminent death. I want more of that.
Still one of my all time guilty pleasure faves.
Jonathan Liebesman's Battle : Los Angeles was a reasonable success back in 2011 arriving during a spate of alien invasion films. It had to compete with a Transformers film, Cowboys and Aliens, that horrible turd The Darkest Hour, and Attack the Block, hardly the most inventive bunch of science fiction films. Bay's film won the box office battle, Favreau's film brought James Bond and Indiana Jones together in a misfiring film with tonal issues, and Gorak's Darkest Hour was simply that for its star Emile Hirsch.
Liebesman's film however will be the one most will have forgotten about first. Smaller names on the cast roster, special effects that weren't particularly memorable or that special, and described as your typical popcorn…
Mi primera película a conciencia siempre es especial. Sexta vez, igual de especial.
I’ve seen this roughly 3 times and I couldn’t tell you a damn thing that happens besides the obvious.
Re-watch:
I must say it's better on re-watch compared to when it originally released in 2011.
Looking back at this film, it's a shame we never got any sequels to a film that has MANY possibilities for worldwide storylines, given the title of the film. It's a good military action movie with an alien twist. It does rely a bit too much on "shaky cam" and quick cuts during pretty much every scene, though it definitely has style. On top of that, a lot of the expected tropes from a military flick are present, but again balances that with a real sense of humanity, comradery, and even loss.
One thing I was surprised about, was how good its Score is! The action and CGI mixed with practical effects really hold up too. Overall it's a fun film with believable characters, and Aaron Eckhart in particular delivers a spectacular performance.
Idk why I feel the need to watch garbage movies??? Like, I knew this was gonna suck. Why did I watch it??? Is it balance??? Is it cause I watched a Matt Reeves Sci-Fi Classic and felt the need to even it out????
Anyways
Battle Los Angeles plays like the longest, most expensive yet shoddily made commercial for a fake Call of Duty game. Any bad trope of action flicks, war flicks, alien invasion flicks, disaster flicks etc is here and ever present. The gang’s all here, horrific, headache inducing shaky cam during action scenes, lazy set design and action that does not in-still any feeling of tension within the viewer, generic characters who fill out the tired 5-6 person…
