"and of course, like any good horror film, the van won't start"
not as good as THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE (then again, what is?) but has a similar low-budget hangout vibe that i loved. horror movies directed by women seem to be a lot better at this, the girls seem much more natural (if not exactly realistic or well performed) and they're often funny, which makes the scary parts scarier (it also reminded me of MADMAN in this respect, it's so dreamy and chill for most of the run time that the violence is a shock). some great hallucination/ghost sequences and some truly creepy kills, just overall really beautiful...
they say that cooking simple foods is the most difficult, bread…
"What is it?"
"It smells like… like, like SEX!"
"What are you talking about?"
"It's sex! Sweat, cheap perfume, unwashed bodies. Sex!"
"Oh, that's DISGUSTING!"
Typical Roberta Findlay madness!
I'll always have affection for this silly supernatural horror flick - available on YouTube, if you're so inclined - in which a gaggle of college girls is haunted by the spirits inhabiting their sorority house, the site of a former brothel. (One of these phantoms is played by Pam La Testa, the assassin in The Oracle.) Despite the film's title, there's not actually all that much gore, but for some good moody lighting and mildly sexy lesbian ghost-on-ghost action seen via mirrors, this is still a pretty enjoyable time that flits…
From the notorious Grandmother of grime Roberta Findlay comes a twisted tale of supernatural terror! What Blood Sisters lacks in story and consistency it makes up for with heavy dosages of gritty realism and detailed character portrayals. This is highlighted by the unique expertise of direction refined through years of visceral low budget film making.
Little pervy Peter is quite the trouble maker. After he fails at getting his friend to take her clothes off for him he retreats to the brothel that his mom works at. After finding his mom hooking up with a customer he shoots them both with a shotgun! Dang Petey!
Flash forward 13 years and a group of gals have arrived at the same brothel.…
Oh Roberta...you either love her or you don’t and damn I sure do. I’ve been wanting to see this one for a hot minute so I’m glad I finally got to. It doesn’t quite reach the glorious heights of The Oracle, but it honestly comes close.
Lots of great atmosphere. A beautiful mansion setting. The “sarcastic” sorority sister spitting out such witticisms as “omg it looks like an Alfred Hitchcock reject!!” when first viewing the house. What does that mean? I couldn’t tell you and it doesn’t even matter because this film is fantastic. It doesn’t need to mean anything. Roberta made this film to pay off an IRS debt and that’s a good enough reason for me. I mean, don’t…
Roberta Findlay certainly has a solid directorial hand/eye at work in this this low-budget sorority haunted house slasher. Well-constructed shot transitions, indirect lighting, solid composition, all are hallmarks of a sensibility at work that makes this look far better than most movies of its period and format. What happens when a bunch of pledges are made to weekend in a fake haunted ex-brothel which is an actual haunted ex-brothel? The girls all have realistic, grounded personalities, and their exploration of the house proceeds organically and coherently, as the movie's narrative linking past and present unfolds. The camera moves from from room-to-room as the pledges do, frequently lit ambiently with flashlights, adding to a sense of discovery. The focus is frequently…
Fun supernatural slasher from Roberta Findlay. I've wanted to see more of her films since I've enjoyed everything I've seen so far. This is a low budget and sleazy romp through wacky town with likeable characters and decent entertainment value.
A young boy murders his mother after finding her getting it on at a brothel. Years later the brothel is now a sorority house where several new female pledges have moved in. It doesn't take long for shit to hit the fan as all sorts of supernatural shenanigans start to go down.
I love the style and gritty aesthetic Findlay captures in her films and there's always attention to detail. While not quite as raw or edgy as some of…
Roberta Findlay's late 80's supernatural slasher is extremely comforting, the kind of nostalgic dusty pizza slice that you can eat on a sunday afternoon... you just might need a bit more ranch than usual.
A group of sorority babes venture out to a haunted house to spend the night. The frat boys laced it with traps, but it doesn't really matter cause this estate was originally a bordello where a prostitute was murdered by her perverted son.
A cast of kooky ladies, all donning big puffy colourful jackets, wander around this abandoned house like all the other delightful slashers we've consumed over the years. Definitely getting heavy David DeCoteau vibes, as well as Witchery or some other bonkers supernatural slasher…
Me basically complaining about the same things (rejection email) plus bonus complaints (ScarJo's lady parts expendability, 2and wave feminism shoehorning) so feel free to check out that bundle of fun...much like an accidental secret bastard baby locked in the distant and lonely room of a haunted whorehouse. Which, like, wasn't haunted then? So I guess just a regular whorehouse that is not haunted yet.
Roberta Findlay #8 --- A bunch of female students want to join a sorority. For that, they have to spend one night in a haunted whorehouse and find an array of different items.
It's fun seeing the girls wandering through the deserted house that is full of scares. I also cared for most of the characters. The girls are all likable. The guys, not so much.
The story seems pretty generic. But Roberta has a few aces up her sleeve. I didn't expect it to end the way it did. I also liked the special effects, practical as well as optical.
Location-wise one gets to see an old mansion, probably somewhere upstate New York. It's nothing special but works for…
The 2019 Cult Movie Challenge Week 8: Bleeding Skull Week
So for the longest time I couldn't tell if this was a slasher with an actual human killer or if it was a haunted house (brothel to be precise) with a ghostly killer. I also couldn't tell if the killer was completely incompetent (high heels to chase someone in the woods????) or if he/she was just waiting for that exact right moment to start killing people. Also, I realize the the sorority head said pay no heed to any screaming you hear, they're just one of two more pranks that we set up, but there's a lot more screaming than for one or two pranks, and a couple of people…
A bunch of sorority pledges spend a night in a former brothel that played host to a massacre 13 years prior. Wouldn't you know it, soon enough they're being hassled by ghosts with anachronistic haircuts and stalked by a killer in an ill-fitting nightgown.
This is the first Roberta Findlay movie I've seen where her notorious contempt for her own material is unmistakable, at least as far as her screenplay goes. Roberta doesn't give the first goddamn about what happens to any of these people and she cares even less whether we do. Even before a character makes a half-hearted meta-joke about horror movie cliches, it's fairly evident that this one's just a chance for Ms. Findlay to get paid…
Well first of all, this has a very good title.
A bunch of sorority sisters in an old dark house that was once a brothel get offed, one by one, by a cross-dressing killer. Everyone remains pretty glib about it, and the mood is undermined by the horrible musical score that sounds like it should be in some '90s direct-to-video family film. That said, I was fascinated by Annie Choi's review in Bleeding Skull, which, after noting that Roberta Findlay was one of the few women directing horror movies in the '80s, continues: "While her movies still have plenty of nudity and sleaze, they also contain dialogue that feels realistic and familiar. Girls complain that they have to go the…
