Chemistry between people is such an elusive thing. I don't think it is something that can be forced into existence, but I do believe that circumstances can be created for it to flourish. In life it's up to chance, in art it's up to talent.
Blue Jay's writer and director provide the perfect tools for their two protagonists to shine, to charm each other and by proxy to charm us into giving a damn. In just 80 minutes, Paulson and Duplass give us two characters that you know the minute you see them. Through their interactions you feel their shared history, their faded longing that is rekindled, the weight of their present alleviated for just a second by the tenderness…
"There's nothing wrong with my life. I should be happy. But there's this sadness and I don't know where it comes from."
A lovely, melancholic stroll down the love that coulda, shoulda, woulda. If you are on a strict - one romantic movie a year diet, make sure that this is the one.
This recent TIFF I started to notice a trend emerge. Out of the 23 films I saw, probably half a dozen were produced by Amazon. These were the smaller films that I ended up loving, and it made me think that maybe the studio / theatrical distribution system was finally beginning to crack. One night when out for beers, my Norwegian LB buddy ( or I should say Norwegian LB buddy that was at TIFF, as I have many Norwegian LB buddies ) Thomas Ringdall effused about a little film he had just seen that day, Blue Jay. Lise had passed on it for our picks, as she noted it was a Netflix production, and would soon be available.

I wasn't expecting for this one to hit me as hard as it did. Cried a little, smiled a lot, I loved it. Sarah and Mark have amazing chemistry I hope they make more movies together.
“I fucking hate love. I loathe the hope it allowed to fester in me. The glimmer of life where my future was not just my own. I hate loving her.”
- A. Giannoccaro
A brilliant piece on love, nostalgia, what could have been, and what should have been. Emotional as fuck. Dialogue and chemistry breathing with life. Beautiful photography.
Mark Duplass is a genius. A genius that can act at that. Seeing Sarah Paulson starting to crawl her way out of that TV-cocoon is just magnificent. A few more of these, and she'll surely spread her wings and turn into that beautiful butterfly she deserves to be.
One of those movies that really make you appreciate that Netflix subscription.
La pareja funciona, y eso es suficiente en el mundo post Mumblecore de los Duplass.
Gostei muito. Mais uma vez, Sarah Paulson entregando tudo, Mark Duplass carisma puro. É um Before Sunset, só que ele não perde o avião
this hands down one of the most heartwarming and heartwrenching movies i've ever watched. i love that it's in black and white.
absolutely love that it's in black and white! cried and laughed most the way through the film, especially during the dinner scene
thank u for changing my life i'm literally a movie
a sarah beijando um homem pra pagar os remédios de hipertensão da holland, é sobre isso ❤️🌈
“Jim has been ripped in half... but I am happy to bleed, for there is Amanda.”
i’m come back to this line every few months, and somehow i just always end up watching the whole movie again. it still feels equally powerful as on the first watch, if not more so, it’s one of the most beautiful movies i’ve ever seen because it’s so real, so REAL; real love, real hurt, and everything in between.
blue jay is further proof that the romantic recipe that i prefer is that of a love story that transcends the traditional teenagey kilig that comes from the likes of to all the boys i've loved before. as a reluctant young adult, my preference shifted to contents that involve adults philosophizing their boring lives, only to end up kissing and argue about the what-might-have-beens that they long suppressed to segue about out loud.
while decidedly not as conversationally spectacular and eloquent a la before trilogy, blue jay still wins my heart as a heavy consumer of films that just generously talk more than it seeks to thrill the mind with action-packed scenes.
