Terrific! I love (almost) any movie that feels like it should just be a stage play. I've seen this type of sex comedy done so many times where they just have the loveless couple and the freaky "funny" couple without any other personality, so it was refreshing to see them treat them like two distinct couples with stories that needed to be told! And it's earnestly funny in a way a lot of modern sex comedies aren't, because it isn't just relying on "sex is weird and being horny is cuckoo" to be its only jokes. Everyone's great, but Elliot Gould and Dylan Cannon are soooo good. Cannon's reaction faces alone carry the movie so far. Also, Natalie Wood is absolutely gorgeous? Every time I see her it feels like I'm seeing her for the first time. Good lord. Wonder if she's single...

The Not-So-Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. It occurred to me as I was watching again for the first time in a while that I’m now the same age as Robert Culp’s character, a privileged self-serious sophisticate living comfortably in Los Angeles with his urbane wife and high-toned friends as they acclimate to their Esalen-learned emotional elevation/hoodoo. The New Hollywood classics hit different the older you get. I adore Dyan Cannon in this, it’s amazing to think this is her first big film role and the first thing she did professionally after divorcing Cary Grant (33 years her senior). Mazursky’s balance between unease and enlightenment is so graceful but fearless, I really admire what he was up to at this time—none of the self-flagellating psychological violence that his peers were after. It’s all grounded dramedy, realistic but heightened, sexy but ordinary, full of broken characters gluing themselves back together.

What a hidden gem! I'm genuinely shocked at how good this was. A really fascinating investigation into sexuality, relationships, and the gray area that exists within that. While the whole story is strictly heterosexual, in a completely unnecessary way, it's still really fun to watch. The way the film builds to its climax by moving back and forth between short sequences and prolonged scenes works perfectly for the story. The whole thing is really, really well paced and edited. Overall, I was really impressed and would recommend it to the right person.

This movie deserves to be included on more lists of the greatest American comedies of the 1960's, not only because it's very funny as one could expect from Paul Mazursky but also stemming from the conversations it sets forth regarding the boundaries which are imposed within how love can be perceived.

It's clear that Mazursky made this film at the beginning of a new era: for the time, it's only fitting one would imagine how racy a film like this could be, given its frank discussions of sexuality. But what sets Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice apart from most other sex comedies that have come in the years since, is that it never feels afraid to address how complicated it feels to harbour these feelings whether you're in love or not.

This movie feels very 1969, but in all the best ways at that, too. In a way, it reaffirms just how fresh most of this feels too.

In a way, the characters in this are more sexually liberated than we are. Orgies are still so taboo I think, so the fact that they even considered having one is so wild. 1969 audiences weren’t ready!

All I knew about this was that it was an early New Hollywood, swinging 60s, movie of its time kinda thing, with Elliott Gould.

Blind bought the Twilight Time bluray of it last year during their going out of business sale, and finally checked it off my watchlist. So glad I did, cuz it's terrific. (The transfer is stunningly good, too, as is always the case with Twilight Time)

When they say "it was a different time", this is the kind of movie that helps you understand that. It seems very iconically 60s in its spirit, and certainly its look.

I love all the long scenes and all the attempts at honesty and self-exploration. And I love that it's both celebrating and poking fun at that stuff at the same time.

Great four-hander here, too. Natalie Wood (looking just as stunning as this transfer here) and Elliott Gould especially, but it's pretty even between the group.

More so than my original watch in college.
Becomes evergreen with age.

Genius genius

Infidelity is always the main cause of conflict in every household - yes, even if you were that couple who lived in the 60s & fully embraced the free spirit ideology.

From Bob & Carol, we learn to forgive our partner by not dwelling on their mistake. As for Ted & Alice, we learn to admit our mistake & face the problem head on, even though it's sickening.

Despite its flamboyant visual, the story & the characters are put together nicely, making it relatable for the audience. Especially when Ted & Alice arguing in the bedroom, which happens to be my favorite scene in this film. The passive-aggressive exchange between them is raw & brutally honest.

Definitely worth to watch 👍🏻

The chemistry in this movie.....take notes films in the late 2010s that think it accomplishes this just by hiring hot actors!!!
