The details of Superman’s origin are so ingrained in pop culture they’re rarely questioned, but dwell on them for even a second and the story becomes completely deranged. A kind couple from Kansas discovers an alien baby in a space ship and raises it as their child? When he begins displaying world-changing (or perhaps world-destroying) super powers, they take it in stride and keep it secret? How do they know this thing won’t eat them?
They don’t, and that’s the point. The original Superman story is about the triumph of American values over everything else. Clark Kent doesn’t just fight for truth, justice, and the American way; his entire personality was forged by those ideals. They transformed him from strange…
It’s a no from me... The best part of the movie was the credits when Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy played.
Bad Superman.
You mean Evil Superman, right?
Nope. Just bad, bland, beige, boring Superman.
But what about the gory bits?
Fine. Bad Superman with some cool gory bits.
Really makes you think. Like, what IF Superman was an evil little boy? Probably would be bad news.
Pros:
• Genuinely scary
• Outrageous violence and lots of gore
• Elizabeth Banks' performance
• The ending
Cons:
• An intriguing concept that they didn't utilize that much. What a waste!
Also, Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy" played during the end credits. I thought it was hilariously cheesy and I don't know if that's a good/bad thing.
Overall, Brightburn is a lot of fun if you're just in the mood for simple entertainment that didn't require much thought. It's bloody, funny, and crazy! It could've been written better but oh well! One of my guilty pleasures of 2019.
This film comes from producer James Gunn, screenwriters Brian and Mark Gunn, who are his cousins, and the director David Yarovesky who had a minor role in Guardians of the Galaxy.
You already know what’s this film about. It’s like an episode of The Twilight Zone in which Superman learns how to use his powers in a bad way.
This was a quite mixed bag for me. It had some good elements and it was very entertaining, but the script heavily dragged this film down.
From start to finish, the script felt uninspired. The script was based on an interesting concept. Unfortunately, the concept is the only thing there’s in this film, it was lazily written. I hate using the…
The story was whatever but the death scenes were so gruesome so I'll give it 2 stars based on that alone . The other .5 is just because
Before I wrote this review I wrote out a long ranting one about wasted potential, but honestly we all knew what this was. We came here for evil mini Superman and that’s all we got.
As a side note this movie is another in the long line of horror movies that relies on the trope of adopted children as murderous sociopaths. Why are so many movies weirdly anti-adoption?
Just a shitty movie, pretty much sucks on every front. Why is it so hard to watch a decent genre film on Netflix.
Handwerklich solide.
Very okay. The gore is cool if you like that, but I'm not a fan in particular.
The first half is great. Brandon discovering his powers while his parents don't know what's happening is very well done. And the idea of the Superman origin in the horror genre is very intelligent.
But when Brandon starts acting evil... The movie starts not being that good.
Brightburn is a gory good time that takes the Superman origin story to the next level.
Almost a steady diet of flickering lights, foreshadowing and jump scares. Was hoping it wasn’t going to be this mainstream. One little push and it would have been decent.
Is it just me or was that credits song OVERKILL!!!
