I LOVE ROAD TRIP MOVIES AND I LOVE FEMALE FRIENDSHIP
also all of the scenes in wales were so embarrassingly accurate... jesus, i need to get out of here ASAP
Would have been fantastic if directed by Edgar Wright, but alas here we are.
And thus
A Comprehensive List of Why Burn Burn Burn thinks its the Super Bestest Indie Comedy of All Time Ever (even though its actually quite shite)
1. Its characters are discovering themselves sooo hard. Way harder than you could ever discover yourself. If discovering yourself was a competition, these dicks would be winning it.
2. Its sooo philosophical. You thought the Bible was heady? Think again you uncultured prick, Burn Burn Burn is like Chicken soup for the teenage soul on Steroids. About to teach you a thing or two about life you already knew.
3. What is that? You say that Me Earl and…
When watching a lot of films, the sense of familiarity in a story can often be an obstacle. At least for me, it’s something which can prevent me from truly feeling a film is great, but at the end of the day it’s really all about how the film manages to overcome the familiarity. In the case of Burn Burn Burn, there’s a heap of sincerity but in spite of the effort, this road trip about two friends mourning their dead friend isn’t quite enough to really work.
The use of video messages from their friend is a sweet and sad way of communication from the other side of the grave but also just a…
Burn Burn Burn is a really sweet, charming and tender indie feature whose quality belies the fact that it marks the full length feature debut of both director Chanya Button and writer Charlie Covell (who is perhaps better known as an actress from many a sitcom) and hooray that they are both females telling a story from a female perspective!
Chloe Pirrie and Laura Carmichael convince as two friends, Alex and Seph, whose life hasn't really mapped out the way they had hoped or planned. But their circumstances are nothing compared to their friend Dan (Poldark's Jack Farthing) who has recently died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 29. Entrusted with Dan's ashes, the two girls embark on a…
"It'll be like Thelma and Louise plus Casper the friendly ghost."
What a perfect little gem hidden on my Netflix list! I went into this with absolutely no expectations since most of the ratings were fairly average. Though let me tell you I don't think this movie is average whatsoever. It's the perfect blend of heartwarming, realistic, emotional, and funny. The portrayal of friendship in this movie takes it to a completely different level. I could've watched Chloe Pirrie and Laura Carmichael on this road trip for another hour.

Lost, troubled, heal*ing souls, I love you.

Did I ever mention how much I love Chloe Pirrie? Such a fantastic actor, seemingly completely unheralded. Here she stars opposite the new to me but no less enjoyable to watch Laura Carmichael as two friends on a journey of self discovery and despite some shaky scripting choices and some at times uninspiring direction perform they nail their "everywoman twenty-something" characters. And that's something first time director Chanya Button has spoken about in promoting the film, women can be strong without being "Strong Women" archetypes, they can be confused and lost and make bad decisions and still have the power to muddle through all the same. And it's very funny, with some superb observational humour in amongst the drama, to…
“Are there any Jaffa cakes by the way?”
“No.”
“FUCKKK!!!” - Sally Phillips reacting in an appropriate manner to the serious issues at hand.
Nicely put together indie sees some moving, if slightly maudlin, monologues interspersed with a good balance of British black humor, some handy sub-plots and pleasant cinematography. A young cast but with appearances in variously meaningful characters from established British actors, including Alison Steadman. Yes it occasionally hits you over the head with the message, but for me it's forgivable.
starts off kinda rocky but the third act hits you like a freight train.... tears were shed ladies and gentlemen
every time I think I am over my skins phase I unintentionally come across a movie that not only stars my teenage love Joe Dempsie (rip Chris, still not over it) but also has a character named Pandora ANDDD has PANDORA’S MUM in it!!!!
Long live the emo skins kids who are sad nostalgic adults now 🙃🙃
Lovely film.
Some weird narrative choices, but it’s a quaint charming feature.
Go Lady Edith!
I watched this at the BFI film festival and it’s one of the few films from that year that really stuck with me. I just loved it.
It’s one of those brilliant movies where you laugh at moments when you really feel like you shouldn’t. I cried a lot too. Just a great film
