In early November, after having watched my 42nd Jess Franco flick.. OF THE YEAR, I decided to take a small break from his movies. I love his brand of Euro-sleaze of course, but there is also a lot of sameness/repetition running through out his work; I started to grow a bit tired of it.
It was time to recharge the ol' Jess-appreciation-battery.
I am glad I did, because here everyone's favourite pervy uncle is up to his old tricks again. He does put a bit of an exotic spin to the story by transporting it to Haiti (it's really just Lisbon, Portugal, actually), but a large part of this is a rehash of his Nightmares Come at Night. He just…
Jess is my spirit animal.
Everyone naked! All the Time! In Heels! Dancing! To bongos!
And this glorious soundtrack!
Fun, utterly wankable, so many bouncing boobies! A light plot of voodoo vs Russian spy murders, replete with needles in dolls, and really the greatest stare off scene ever between the eyes of two ladies and one's eyes go out of focus and back in so you know she is spiral-eyeing her with the magicks (see my instagram story iz funny)
probs gunna spend entire quarantine horizontal, followers be warned...
I dunno if it's cuz I'm just tired but this one seemed to lack the charm of other Franco trashterpieces. It's still super trashy but it was kinda boring, no real threat with the voodoo thing, seemed more like it was filmed at a nudist colony where they liked to dance poorly to drum beats. It was shot well through.
Like almost all Dietrich-produced Franco films, this just doesn't do it for me. Absolutely stunning to look at w/ a very gorgeous, lush set design and I especially love the use of mirrors. It has a great score full of pounding drums that adds a nice intensity to the otherwise boring plot. This is apparently a remake of Nightmares Come At Night (which is a much, much better film). This just.... lacks any real passion and feels dull. I usually find that Franco has a knack for making me feel captivated by over-long softcore scenes but it didn't work this time, unfortunately.
90% naked people writhing on beds and moaning. 9% hairy butts thrusting. 1% voodoo. For all its filler bullshit, I still kind of loved Voodoo Passion, or Call of the Blonde Goddess, or whatever you want to call it. Franco's cinematography is top-notch... when it's in focus. The setting is really cool... when it's shot in the actual setting. The music is a blast... when it's not just cliché voodoo drum beats... which it is almost constantly. Wait. Why do I like this? I don't know. Jess Franco does strange things to me.
Spring chicken Susan alights at the small island nation of Haiti to find her new vip hubby's palatial villa populated with bewitchingly beautiful women, stealing her right out of her comfort zone. As she adjusts to her exotic island lifestyle, she begins to learn more about the local religion of Voodoo, and fears it may be related to the increasingly strange dreamscapes she inhabits, and worse, the murders of visiting officials...
Finally, after a seemingly endless string of detritus, I hit Year of Franco paydirt. This is easily the finest of Franco's films for Dietrich. From the very outset I knew I was back in good hands when I saw the unstable images and focal…
A sun-drenched fantasy. This might be Jess making his very-Franco version of I Walked with a Zombie. The blonde goddess is made up like Jean Harlow. It was a pleasure to let this movie wash over me on a bright Saturday afternoon. The infinity of mirrors in the bedrooms parallels the unending call to the voodoo ritual for our heroine; if only the repetition of the quarantine days were anything like THAT.
I love the atmosphere of this film! Another great Franco film with beautiful locations.
Okay I know, I keep giving Franco flicks the same 2 stars. It is in no way helpful to you or myself in differentiating the "good" ones from the "bad" ones. But I gotta be real, they're all kind of the same movie: frequently boring, fairly pointless, infinitely beautiful and endlessly fascinating. Settling on a star rating isn't exactly advanced calculus but it is starting to feel pretty arbitrary.
This one is in Haiti and the lead actress sucks but otherwise it's fine.
Striking for how strongly it echoes the structure of another occult, Eurosleaze tone-poem-dreamscape, Joe Sarno's VAMPIRE ECSTASY.
Both films use the same sort of redundancy, fail-safe-ing their erotic charge by routing and re-routing an almost identical (and regularly repeated) spectacle. A music-and-dance-and-nudity-fueled set-piece that punctuates developments in character and plot and run-time. What amounts to, really, a kind of wordless Greek chorus that replaces the syllables of words with the rhythms of bodies.
In Sarno's pic, it's the black-garbed wait staff of the mysterious Castle Varga, using their rhythmic nightly ritual of bouncing flesh and phallic candles to both invoke their martyred patron saint — their long-lost vampire baroness — and to induce (seduce, hypnotize) the current guests of the…
Probably the closest Jess Franco came to depicting a hard edged documentary on life in Haiti.
Ah, who am I fooling?
A remake of his own earlier NIGHTMARES COME AT NIGHT but with a much stronger emphasis on non-stop nudity, this is one of his many Erwin C. Dietrich productions. Must admit I always prefer films such as this one where he is somewhat reined in by a strong producer, resulting in tighter better looking Franco flicks.
Strong traces of a I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE at least thematically though maybe not in style.
gotta say, teenage me is pretty jealous. not much in the the way of wardrobe or plot, but the incest-voodoo-spy-hypnosis deal was clever enough, I suppose. Ines' smoldering eyes did a lot of work.

A woman joins her diplomat husband in Haiti and is soon plagued by dreams of a Voodoo orgy that compel her to apparently kill a series of people who are always in the middle of sex. Is she actually committing murder or is it all just a terrible nightmare? Leave it to Jess Franco - even when making a straight up sex movie, he can't help tweezing it up with all manner of ridiculousness. This one includes a great performance by Karine Gambier as the diplomats rampaging nymphomaniac sister and is helped immeasurably by the presence of the stunning Vicky Adams, who appears to be a white Voodoo priestess and does some of the weirdest naked tribal dances you've ever…

--- A Dietrich era remake of the Nightmares come at Night / Necronomicon storyline. The actress who plays the servant and voodoo girl is wonderfully cast. She has a mysterious presence about her. Too bad, not much is known about her.
The music consists of lots of drumming and bass. Good stuff.
The story is secondary to the visuals and the softcore sex scenes. The surreal aspect of the story isn't executed as well as in all the other Franco-movies with that subject. But overall it's a fun watch.

Probably one of the best of the Erwin C Dietrich Franco films. Taps into the dreamlike vibe of his best work.
