"Collateral Damage" is a serviceable action film, but neither director, Andrew Davis, nor star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, can elevate the film into anything enjoyable. Boasting an intriguing concept that is undercut by belabored plotting and tedious storytelling, the film wilts under its weaknesses.
The story revolves around Schwarzenegger's American firefighter who, after losing his wife and child in a terrorist attack, travels to Colombia to seek justice. The premise may be a bit a of stretch, but it all makes sense for a set-up of an action film starring Mr. Schwarzenegger; however, the plot's machinations, the who, the how, and the why of the attack, quash any interest the story's jumping off point may have generated.
The execution does nothing to…
In my quest to watch every Arnold film ever, Collateral Damage is piled onto the list of his not so successful films. No wonder he became Governor of California after this, his career was sinking.
This is mostly a bore. Nothing really happens, there's very few action scenes and the climax ends in a highly unsatisfying manner. Not to mention, there's an absence of one-liners. An Arnold film without one liners is like a full English breakfast without eggs. It's fucking empty and joyless.
There is some hilarity here though, very illogical moments riddle the film - they're hilarious but far and few between. It's a shame, but whatever. There's better to be had and I am gonna find it. Avoid this one if you want, you're missing nothing much.
Much like with Robin Williams, Arnold Schwarzenegger's glory years of the 1980s and 1990s were over and as he entered the 2000s decade, his growing list of hits began to slow down and his follow-ups saw a decline in quality. Although arguably in say 1996's Jingle All The Way (which I enjoyed) and Eraser, reception for both of those films ranged from negative to lukewarm with the latter. & ever since they came out, Arnie hasn't scored a major box office hit; that, and I've never really liked his post-2000s efforts. After the smash that was The Fugitive, director Andrew Davis turned his attention to Schwarzenneger and whilst there is no doubt he is a great action movie star, he is…
One of the very worst starring vehicles of Arnold's career. Drab, phony, unpleasant, everyone switched to autopilot. What in holy fuck happened to Andrew Davis, who evolved to "Under Siege" and "The Fugitive" and then made "Steal Big, Steal Little", "Chain Reaction", "A Perfect Murder", and this. I always wished that Arnold hadn't forsaken acting shortly after making this movie to do 8 years as governor, but after finally seeing this fail to meet even my humblest of expectations, perhaps I oughta be grateful that we were spared more expired action turds like it.
Collateral Damage. This film (not including Terminator 3) marked the end of Arnies flagging career the first time round as he moved into politics. He's had a comeback recently as he's found a place in the currently trendy 'I'm too old for this shit' action genre made popular by the expendables movie. This film was all the more disappointing as it's directed by Andrew Davis and so I expected a lot more. A totally forgettable movie with some semi decent but worn out action scenes, and a totally implausible storyline. This film sees Arnie as a fireman, travelling to Columbia to have revenge on the terrorists that killed his family. Can you see why I was disappointed? An Arnie revenge…

"So, you want collateral damage, huh? I'll give you fucking collateral damage!"
I never knew I needed Arnold Schwarzenegger storming an office full of workers and deciding to destroy a bunch of expensive equipment in said office while yelling about collateral damage and then picking up a baseball bat to further destroy more property until now. Honestly the funniest thing on this planet. Anyways, Collateral Damage immensely suffers from the formulaic standards and run-of-the-mill storytelling which plagued many early 2000's action thrillers for not even Arnold himself could elevate the entertainment value by much.
Collateral Damage is proof, at least, that even lesser tier Schwarzenegger action movies are still pretty enjoyable. I don't know if I've really talked about it much before here on Letterboxd but Arnold is one of my favorite actors out there, I know objectively he is not great dramatically but I just love his screen presence and generally enjoy his movies.
This one has Arnold playing a fireman named Gordy who loses his family in a terrorist bombing and decides to go on a revenge mission against the Colombian guerillas responsible for the attack. As far as action films go, I think Collateral Damage has two major problems.
The first problem is pretty much the entire middle section of the…
While Arnold only has appeared in a couple truly great films the majority of his movies are at least entertaining (Jingle all the Way, case in point). This film while watchable is among both his and director Andrew Davis's (Under Siege, The Fugitive) career low points. Its got your basic revenge movie scenario (Arnie's family gets killed, he goes to get the terrorists who did it), but neither Arnold nor the script sells the emotional reality of his characters loss or need for vengeance.
That could be ok if the action is up to par, I mean the plot of "Commando" isn't exactly "Crime and Punishment" but its one of the best action movies ever. The action here feels strangely…
Another Arnold vehicle that is hated by his fans, Collateral Damage is another entertaining action thriller that’s only forgettable in comparison with his older films. It’s junk food, but boy is it delicious.
Arnold delivers a good performance as a grieving, vengeance-seeking father, and here he's doing Liam Neeson stuff before it was cool. He’s the best actor in the movie, which is fine since he’s the only reason anyone is gonna watch this.
The action scenes, the highlight, are lots of fun, and are as overblown as any of Arnie’s movies. The shed fight, the mine field fight and village attack, and the final battle are awesome, along with some other small scenes. Arnold has three great fight scenes,…
Things I enjoyed in this movie:
1) John Turturro bragging about being Canadian
2) ...
Oh, uhh, I guess that's it.
Mixed feelings about this one, pacing is weird and plot doesn’t make much sense, but it’s nice to see Arnold act in a non campy role and there’s a few twists at the end that I thought were good enough to ignore some of the messy plot. This is a 2 and a half star movie but bumping it to 3 because, Arnold is good in it, John Leguizamo is more memorable than any other character for the 10 minutes he’s in it, there’s a cool Canadian pervert in it (don’t say I need to turn my TV on), I recognized a Sopranos actor, and I really liked one of the end twists.
Definitely one of the weaker Arny movies I’ve ever seen. It’s just so bland and boring and I don’t really understand how this firefighter becomes embroiled in this giant espionage story and winds up in a jungle running through fields of mines and shit. Even the other actors are sleepwalking through this movie. You can’t come up with any better dialogue between a wise cracking Leguizamo and a rough and tumble Schwarzenegger ?
The part where he said collateral damage and smashed some stuff was pretty cool though, love a good smash.
Another disappointing Schwarzenegger action movie that starts of fine but gets lost along the way, despite some decent action sequences and a good cast.
Boring action film that even Arnold Schwarzenegger can't make even a bit interesting. Uninteresting story telling, bland characters and everything is feeling the same and seen million times before. I watched it only because of my love for Arnold and there's really not a thing more, that makes it good. Watch it, if you are tired of viewing the same several movies with Schwarzenegger and want something new.
After Arnie's wife and child got killed by a terrorist attack by Colombian Guerrilas he travels to South America to seek revenge...
This was the time which had Arnie going for more 'serious' (action) roles. To make him at least a bit believable in this he's a firefighter but somehow he also knows how to build bombs and take out trained soldiers. But then he's also very sad in a few scenes, especially after his family got killed. He doesn't manage to cry (END OF DAYS taught him a lesson I guess) but I believed him to be upset about that. His kid was the worst by the way and I was glad it wasn't around that much.
So, everything…
