The experience of getting to see a Wakaliwood movie with an audience of 1,000 people at TIFF, with live narration by the inimitable V.J. Emmie ("V.J." stands for "Video Joker"), and with Nabwana I.G.G. (rural Uganda's greatest action filmmaker) in attendance, is an experience I will cherish.

First time seeing this since TIFF Midnight Madness, all I can really say is this: you are not ready to witness the Waka Starz in action.

Nothing but respect to the lunatic filmmakers of Wakaliwood. Crazy World moves at an ADHD pace, doesn't get out of ideas for a second, is so incredibly charming and does the ridiculous over the top action thing so unbelievably well that you'd have to be a real schmuck to even feel the "budget".
A bunch of kids kill bad guys, a crazy guy turns out to be very wise, a father is looking for his child and a funny fate awaits the evil villain in the end.
I've seen this on YouTube thanks to the "We are One" festival and I think it'll be online for a few more days. Definitely go check it out!

always ryde or die for 1. action movies with horror villains, like silent rage or cobra, and 2. themes of a 'crazy' outsider from straight society ("in this world, if you talk sense you are mad"). cant wait for RETURN OF UNCLE BENON cannes 2021
A privileged moment: a thousand people gathered together to watch a deranged Wakaliwood action film with live feature length narration from Video Joker VJ Emmie. The fourth wall came crashing down at the halfway point. A potent reminder that cinema can do anything and everything, the sheer exuberance of creativity, budget be damned. Certainly one of the best TIFF screenings ever.
No doubt my favorite screening of TIFF, as there was a film playing that the audience enjoyed, but this was truly an experience.
Both the director and main VJ were there, prompting 15 minutes of straight applause as we were told of how they almost weren't able to get into the country because border patrol was confused why and how a Ugandan got to the Canadian border.
When the film started, it was more crazy then an interactive screening of the room, with every hard kick, punch, and shot from a gun triggered major applause and even times screams and standing ovations. Más que informar, el principal objetivo es entretener y la verdad lo cumple de una manera muy amena. Los diálogos son divertidos, las actuaciones son en verdad buenas. Probablemente en cuanto a cinematografía le falta muchas mejoras y los efectos especiales son, bueno, de lo más chafa. Sin embargo, esto va acorde con el tono de la película, que es un tono cómico y ligero. La película no se toma en serio así misma sino más bien se burla de ella misma, de Uganda y de su sociedad.
No estoy acostumbrada a este tipo de cine que se toma las cosas tan a la ligera, no obstante, cumple con entretener y te hace pasar un buen rato. Es asombroso cómo a pesar de tener poco presupuesto, las personas se las ingenian para ofrecer algo creativo y con mucha astucia de por medio. La recomiendo porque es bueno ver un cine diferente y expandir más el panorama. Bien por Uganda.

from the bottom of my heart i've nothing but appreciation for wakaliwood: honest cinema, oozing with inventiveness, which despite not having a budget proposes a form of community work, self-aware of its inherent lightness without falling into a forced camp. this proposal, as it is based on the lack of resources, doesn't adhere to the conventions of the genre that it mimics/honors: "crazy world" jumps between vignettes, which are not necessarily connected to the main structure, until everything finally explodes in a grand finale, as excessive as it is hilarious
if you weren't around to see citizen kane when it was new, or the godfather when it was new, don't be sad, because you were alive to see crazy world when it was new
