The septuagenarian showrunner, creator of the police procedural NYPD Blue and long-time screenwriter on NBC’s Hill Street Blues, has long enjoyed a secondary career as an inveterate gambler — though it has often seemed of primary interest to him. “Judging from the accounts of several men and women who know him well,” a profile in the Hollywood Reporter divulged several years ago, “he is a person of extreme talent but also extreme behaviour.” How extreme? Means something. A river cascade between past and future, the current everflowing out and onward. Lanterns amidst gentle snowfall, clasped hands within death and birth. Weddings and funerals and lullabies towards the fucking heavens, a poem to say just to be heard. Time - a second helping.
In a world where it seems no one will be happy with the end of a beloved, long-running series these days...I personally walked out of the town of Deadwood, SD incredibly satisfied.
A cocksucker of a climax.
This is the most context-dependent thing I’ve seen in a long time. As a general rule I try to consider the film and not its maker, mostly a mechanism so that I don’t have to morally cleanse everything that I consume and thus starve to death. Impossible here, though. You must have seen the entire three season run of Deadwood in order for this to land the way it should. More than that, this is the last act of David Milch, a dying man, and it’s so encoded into the film that you can’t escape it.

We finally got the finale we needed!
A terrific ending to a legendary show that had a the rug pulled out from underneath it. Great to see all the characters ten years later and tie up some loose ends. They did a phenomenal job putting the town together again, and the story picked up almost where it left off years ago but somehow 10 years later. Really loved what they did.
Staggered, slouching figures against a fading light, left with nothing to do but reflect on the past for lack of a future. Minahan is as adept at capturing images of striking ambiguity as he is images of serene ambiance, images of a town of "such complexities" that nevertheless can house the quiet sweetness of gently grasped hands, of tender hugs, of song to send an old friend to rest. There's violence, yes; bullets and beatings and flame. There are still guns in this valley. And there is plenty of death. Death can come suddenly or slowly, but life will always, always follow. The film follows the series' remarkably bleak ending by finding the silver lining it concluded without. It's not cloying or desperately cathartic. In the end (as we all are, in the end), it's purely human.

Milch’s RIO BRAVO. Progress takes hold, destiny continues to manifest, but Mister Amalgamation & Capital will also be served. As deeply satisfying a funeral for an old friend could be. Huzzah then.

Forget "Game of Thrones" or "The Avengers" this has made my 2019!!

Although not up to the same bar of writing set by the show, it does nicely wrap up several loose ends occasioned by the early cancelation. Unfortunately Al takes a backseat role as an invalid but Bullock shines in his stead.
I’m so glad they were able to make this movie after the series abruptly and unceremoniously ended in cancellation so many years ago. Deadwood is one of my favorites, and over these last few weeks, I’ve loved every minute spent back into that world. Only, this time, I was able to cap off yet another viewing of the series with a proper conclusion to the story.
The first time I watched this movie when HBO released it last year, I was really taken with it. And upon my second viewing, it’s still affecting.

fucking insufficient three seasons and a measly two-hour movie fucking are. i'll keep this short so as not to provoke asking if brevity is in my repertoire. david milch's deadwood is a gift to humanity and is a picture-perfect depiction of the inner workings of a civilization on the rise. the tie-in film is no different, aside maybe from some minor shooting liberties by minahan, the danger overlying vibrance (and vice-versa) of deadwood still very much present. at the last chapter of this story chronicling deadwood's lively community- though ironically witness to so many deaths (in this movie alone, i count 4, there's maybe more)- the audience is once again cradled with melodic dialogue and an elegant story interweaved with just the right amount of comedy and drama. what a fitting bittersweet farewell
deadwood: the movie, much like the three seasons it follows, is a masterpiece that is like no other. and those that doubt me suck cock by choice!
I was finally able to watch the original show, and the movie was a lovely way to revisit it and it send off.
It was a good western, makes me wanna watch the TV show to appreciate it a bit more though
A spectacular coda to a great series.
It feels almost like the ghost of Deadwood. To see people aging and fading away, still filling their respective rolls in town, is really something.
Of course no matter the ending of the show or the movie Hearst wins. It’s the great heartbreak of the series and it’s the great heartbreak of America.

When it comes to writing, performances, plot type, and music/editing the continuity is impressive and really welcomed by me. Camera angles, shot choices, set design, and overall film quality were a lot different, even jarringly different compared to the series, but for me that is fine as a creative choice. A lot of changes come with 12+ years, especially film quality, and the rest of the experience was close enough to the original for me to see these changes as an enhancement rather than a distraction from the original world of Deadwood.
That being said, as far as Deadwood as a film goes, the plot was simple and for the most part really predictable, which also feels in line with the series.…
