So it finally happened. I met my Nemesis. This film completely and utterly wrenched every emotion imaginable from me and left me gutted, sad, hopeful and amazed. And I cried and that is something I just don't do.
I guess anyone that has seen this film will agree with me that going in blind is the only way to fully appreciate the full extent of what director Kuenne has created here. Rationally, purely on a cinematic level, this film is astounding as it is. It is edited, narrated and structured perfectly. It manages to slowly suck you in and unfolds its story and eventual sentiment…
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father didn't just make me cry. Oh no, definitely not just that. I felt like I was thrown under a 50 mile line of semi-trucks and tractors, only to be thrown off a bridge after that entire ordeal. The rage, the saddening horror, the aching humanity, the relentless grief, the haunting remembrance; this massively potent film is as truthful and passionate as anything that I've ever seen. I am hardly an expert on documentaries, but I've never dealt with one better than this.
And it isn't just the terrifying and chill-inducing story that makes Dear Zachary worth watching. The narration, the sublime editing, and the genuine earnestness of the entire production blew me away. I was left trembling, shaking, and weirdly, wanting more. It is an immaculate achievement in both storytelling and emotional resonance, and it is without a doubt, the most physically demanding film that I have ever experienced.
an incredible story, of course, but... without sounding too callous or cold... not especially well told? i can only imagine the impact this film might have had if it weren't so focused on making one.

Task #11 : A film that makes you cry!

Amateur Director Kurt Kuenne originally had no intentions of creating a documentary for public viewing! This started out as an act of love towards his best friend Andrew Bagby and his baby son Zachary and was only to be shared amongst family and friends! But when the justice system became an unwitting accomplice to a murder his plans for the film changed drastically!
While I highly recommend this film I would be failing you if I didn't reveal how devastating a film this was for me to watch! When I wasn't seething with anger I was crying a river!

I really can't say I "liked" this film. I really can't say I would ever watch it again, or at least not for quite awhile. I really can say that Dear Zachary made me so unbelievably mad that my heart is still running almost as fast as this film's breakneck pace did. This simultaneously heartbreaking and infuriating documentary starts off with both feet running and doesn't stop until your emotions are reduced to either rage or uncontrollable depression. I think I'm in between the two at the moment, as my breath is short and I'm on the verge of sobbing.
To be honest, I was very hesitant to watch Dear Zachary at all because I simply have no interest in…
Jesus fucking christ I am legitimately WEEPING you guys... I am loudly crying. Wow I have never cried this much in any movie or documentary. Only watch this if you want to drown in your own tears
Film Genre Challenge for January: Documentary #1
• I rarely ugly cried when it comes to watching films. Teary-eyed or shedding a tear or two, sure, but that stupid ugly cry face when you make when watching something emotional, nope I rarely do that. Well, it could be that I haven't see that much emotionally cathartic films. But anyway, the last time I fucking ugly cried was when I watched Requiem for a Dream last July 2020. Damn that was a long time ago. And now, I started my 2021 with a film that was so emotionally cathartic, I broke down in tears.
• Good thing I haven't heard about this devastating case at all before watching this film or…
“If I die tomorrow, all I want you to do is sit and toast a beer to me.”
I am broken.
admirable in its approach and doing a lot with a low budget, clearly a labour of love (despite some annoying tendencies, repeating editing tricks that aren't as neat the fourth or fifth time they happen).
This was absolutely devastating, an awful tragedy unfolding before your eyes, but also a beautiful testimony of friendship and family and love.
Ok, so this just broke me. I thought the hard part was over after the stories about Zachary's father, but the last part just made me hit rock bottom.
This film in addition to being the most bitter most sad cinematic experience I’ve ever had is also proof that the personal and political are inseparable.
While there are a few creative flourishes that hurt the tone of this drastically (a certain turning point of the movie nearly ruins the whole point of the film), Dear Zachary does seem to accomplish what its title suggests: a sincere letter to an intimate relationship.
The sometimes amateur filmmaking is easily forgivable once you accept that this was not begun with the planning and mindset of a film seeking an audience outside of the friends and family involved, and that the events happening throughout the course of filming constantly changed the direction of the movie. I think the upbeat editing for the most part helped balance the emotions this documentary presents, and while the structure may seem a bit overdramatic for a documentary at some points, I think it aids in reenforcing the purpose that this ultimately came to have.
Strands of sentiment, skillfully woven into a tapestry of love against a backdrop of unthinkable tragedy. In this case, the devil has been denied an advocate, which may be for the best.
If at this point I’m that devasted I can’t imagine how this family may feel..........
