98.6% sure this invented portraying the harrowing, hallucinatory consequences of Alcoholism on celluloid*; and what innovative special effects to illustrate the delusional state!
To all my friends: I would LOVE a flying bed for Christmas, please!
*That soaring over a city sequence reminded me of the similarly phantasmal ''The Man in Me'' one in The Big Lebowski.
Throw Edison, Porter, Winsor McCay and a massive meal of rarebit together with the fab accompaniment of the Alloy Orchestra and you get this marvellous fantasy film, bursting with photographic tricks as our hero has some pretty disturbing visions and dreams brought on by his over-indulgence.
Whoa, this guy is hungry and has his drinks lined up as well, he's really pouring them down. As the next scene shows he has a hard time getting home. Quite nicely done, the lamppost take. Eventually he do get home, lays down and starts driving his bed. We've all been there.
Experimental bliss, nothing less and at the same time much more. It opens as generic and humorous (in a gross sort of way) but progresses with fancy tricks of juxtapositions and camera tiltings, and quickly descends into catastrophic surrealism with punches of unpredictability and extraordinary fantasy where scenarios become the backgrounds that will toy with every inanimate object. A stunning dream sequence to behold featuring stop-motion tricks and an imagination never seen before in the nightmares of Méliès.
So in a way, this is much more than a flick saying: "Moral of the story: Alcoholism is bad, boys!".
98/100

So... is this the first comic book movie?
Really incredible film, it's amazing to think Porter was experimenting with and honing visual storytelling techniques (like the devils poking the drunk's head) that would become conventions of animated cinema and television for the next 100 years.
One of the first examples of drug induced altered states on celluloid. Excellent effects for the time, pretty much groundbreaking.
There are some great effects being put to use here. The genre is fantasy, but it's the first in a long time to create its own style of fantasy rather than ape Melies. The film gets 4 stars just for the great drunken walk montage at the beginning, but the soaring bed also gives credit to an innovative and fun film that continues to mesh the real and the fantastic into one image.
Probably Porter's best film to date.
Apparently this was based on a popular comic strip of the time. I can see that being a big draw for people then. It certainly is nowadays for us.
Some wacky fun stuff in this film. Great opening scene, probably quite reflective of the comic strip.
Actually the whole thing had a crazy comic strip feel to it.
Good to see Porter expanding out of his normal straightforward work.
Now this is more like it. Edison studios finally puts up a film to match the genius of Melies. The effects here are impressive overall, and the story is cohesive. Unlike Melies’ films, the action here is not so quick, which allows the viewer to actually follow the plot rather than just trying to make sense of chaos. A fantastic early film.
Accurate representation of what's going to happen when Covid restrictions are lifted.

Edwin S. Porter was quick to figure that this medium could be used to put audiences into the subjective point of view of a drunken person, and with Dream of a Rarebit Fiend was the first to capture a trippy and seemingly non-sensical vision on film. Some really interesting stuff to see here!
Also: It goes full The Big Lebowski at the end.

Mesmerising hallucinations, with a clever combination of double exposure and stop motion. I'm fascinated by the imagination of these early filmmakers.
