Agnès Varda may not see as well as she used to, but her creative vision has never been clearer. If the magnificently moving, funny, life-affirming, and altogether wonderful “Faces Places” (or, in its original language, the much smoother “Visages Villages”) is to be the 88-year-old Belgian auteur’s last film, it will be because of her failing eyesight or the inexplicable difficulty she’s had with funding her work, and not because she’s run out of things to say or novel ways to say them.
If this is to be her last film, then it will be one of cinema’s most extraordinary sendoffs, as poignant and perfect a swan song as Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Wind Rises” or Abbas Kiarostami’s “Like Someone in…
Agnès Varda: i’m just a tiny lady with a lot of love in my heart for everyone!!!! Not you godard you can go choke.
I need there to be a TV series wherein Agnès Varda and JR wander the world in search of the mysterious JLG. At the end of every episode, he leaves a cryptic, taunting clue. Like The Fugitive, but with art and sunglasses.
Cute and endearing, but I think the parts that are obviously over-dramatized really didn’t work for me. And once you get the crux of what this tour is going to be, it feels like you’re fighting against the urge to find it a liiiiiiiil tedious. But remember, I also called it cute and endearing!

The first step of a healthy world: conversation. Varda and JR drive through France - a place, like any other, which has changed and will continue to change - and *talk* to people. They consider their values, hopes, stories, and regrets. And no matter who they are or what they stand for, the camera is open to them, and so are Varda and JR. That Faces Places could be considered naive or saccharine is misguided - it's just the initial handshake and face-to-face encounter which matters here, and the faces they capture, the art they create, is limited, specifically, to the time and perspectives they've shared. Their journey finds significance in how much they accomplish in recognition of individuals, communities, and spaces. It's how Varda sees and JR gains experience and how one of the art-pieces washes away in the surf - the acceptance, and kindness, in being.
Agnés sweetie I'm so sorry I'm so sorry that an ugly ass bitch like Godard would even do that to you, oh my god
I realize that Faces Places wouldn't exist without JR, but I kind of wish it could.
(2/36 of my 6 x 6 challenge, 1/6 directed by Agnès Varda)
sometimes a documentary can be the melting pot of cute and fun and that’s the case here
I loved every single hour, minute, and second of this delightful documentary.
Agnes is the cutest person ever💗
(also jean luc godard disrespecting her and their memories literally broke my heart into a million pieces and even after I see breathless I doubt I will forgive him for hurting my sweet Agnes and JR. seriously, she bought him his FAVORITE PASTRIES. Not okay godard. Not okay you 🐀)
“I don’t see you very well, but I see you.”
We never perfectly understand one another, but there is beauty in finding pieces of others and giving pieces of ourselves.
Jean-Luc, you dirty rat.
