Congratulations Jared Hess, you did it. You made a film that lowered the bar to a point of nonexistance. When the joke that had the most people laughing is a guy sharting in a pool, you know you've reached a new low.
Napoleon Dynamite was a fluke. Jared Hess has been and will continue to be Shit. Please don't see this movie, it's horrible and my least favorite film of the year so far.
Also take the fact that this was based on a true story with a grain of salt.
Also, Kate McKinnon is the best part, but that's not saying much
I laughed a bunch at Kate McKinnon’s jilted lover character. Every scene she’s in is funny. That’s the good news. The bad news is she’s only in four scenes. And the scenes without her ain’t good.
i didn't know jason sudeikis was in this movie and then he showed up and i was like FUCK because i wanted to turn it off SO BAD but i can't not watch something with jason sudeikis in it so i had to stick it out for my mans....was it worth it? no
This was extremely dumb, but sometimes it was funny. As a former Owen Wilson completionist, I kind of yearn for more films like The Royal Tenenbaums. Kate McKinnon stole whichever scenes she was in.
Kate McKinnon Marathon, movie #2
Vegan alert:
The David Ghantt character says he feels like a "corndog at a hotdog party".
Lol forgot I saw this. Pretty funny, kinda disappointing, very forgettable.
It probably took a solid minute for me to realize why I all of a sudden thought Jason Sudeikis was super hot in Masterminds and it's 100% because he has a mustache.
The committed cast of Masterminds tries hard, but their efforts are for nought in this awkward, confused, mostly unfunny Coen Brothers knock-off.
a feature film adaptation of jean-claude van damme's mullet from HARD TARGET. it's like if sam peckinpah did SEX AND THE CITY 2, but carrie and the gang do dollywood instead of abu dhabi. PAIN AND GAIN mixed with GUMMO by way of EASTBOUND AND DOWN season 2. owen wilson is ready to win an oscar in the ric flair biopic. also the kate mckinnon x kristen wiig fight scene, which ends with kristen wiig putting vaginal cream in kate mckinnon's mouth, is like the 2nd best action sequence in a movie this year. jared hess is the trailer park wes anderson, and he's still the GOAT.
Simultaneously awful and glorious, Masterminds necessitates your patience. Most of the jokes are awful, with direction that is often flat and lifeless, wholly unfunny and so very forced. But there are bits that work wonderfully, mostly relying on the considerate talents of this phenomenal cast. Hess writes for these performers really well, and Sudekis, Galifinakis and Wiig take full advantage. He finds comedy in character, not situation; creating a cast of people who are just a bit off to sometimes hilarious effect. A word of caution here, though, I can count the bits that work on one hand. Even when it fails or falls flat though, it's entertaining enough; seeing these charismatic people work through a failed bit is interesting enough on it's own. I'd very tentatively recommend this.
This movie is stupid to the highest pedestal, but what were you expecting from Jared Hess? Masterminds might get too stupid at points and some jokes fall flat on their face, but the jokes that do hit had me laughing really hard and that cast is the ultimate dream team. Zach Galifianakis has instant charm, Kristen Wiig is bae, Owen Wilson is funny, and Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Jason Sudeikis kill it in their small roles.
Not really worth the full price of admission, but worth seeing on rental or matinee prices.
i have to be real, it gives me hope seeing zach galifianakis as someone kirsten wiig and jason sudeikis would be friends with..... if he can make the cut, then god dammit so i can i!!!!
Yet another pitiful hackwork from director Jared Hess, Masterminds is a soulless, witless, and poorly crafted and put together Coen brothers wannabe that wastes a wonderful cast and is almost entirely bereft of any actually funny jokes.
Had funny moments, overall though not a very technical or intricate movie.
Just easy watching.
I mean it was funny, but it constantly utilized one of my least favorite kind of humor. Gross out humor. Also, adding a villan to a movie based on a true story, and the true bad guy is still alive is not a great thing to do.
one day i will learn to separate owen wilson from lightning mcqueen....... OH AND JASON SUDEIKIS BEING A GAY HIT MAN WAS PERFECT AND INCREDIBLE. also kristen wig is such a milf ugh marry me please.
