Disappointing and mediocre adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel. Featuring a Nigel Kneale script and Ray Harryhausen effects, I really wanted to like this one more.
The movie itself (filmed in Technicolor) looked great. And it had a few other strong points- the steampunk aesthetic, imaginative sets, and cool stop motion effects.
But the terrible hammy acting and the overall dull story hurt it for me. The pacing seemed off and it dragged on a little longer than it needed to particularly in the build up to the moonshot.
The ending seemed rather abrupt, and recycling the end of "War of the Worlds" rubbed me the wrong way.
I'm curious to check out the recent remake by Mark Gatiss to see if he handled this material any better.
Fun fact- the spacesuits in this film were used in early Doctor Who stories and the original Star Wars trilogy.
