Oscar Isaac Bucket List - Entry 25:
It seems James Horner was hired to score another swashbuckling period film set in Mexico and opted to all but copy and paste his Zorro score. And now I know that Oscar Isaac must play Zorro or there's no justice in the world.
my dad thought watching this would make me believe in god but all it did was make me thirst over oscar isaac and eva longoria
An under the radar film about a subject I knew nothing about that absolutely floored me. It’s a high quality film with flat out superb performances that makes you contemplate and appreciate faith and freedom like few films have ever managed to convey. Yes, it is a faith based film. If that offends some, then this isn’t the movie or the subject for you. Unlike other faith based efforts, this effort is not cheesy or ham-fisted or even preachy. It’s the tale of the Cristeros War (1926-1929); a war by the people of Mexico against the Mexican government who cracked down in brutal ways against the Catholic Church and against religious freedom in general. Andy Garcia is Oscar level good…
Frustratingly close to being very good, but it wastes a good cast on a lifeless script that is afraid to tackle bigger themes, mediocre camerawork, and a rushed, anticlimactic conclusion.
Also why did they speak English? It all sounds fake and stops the actors from giving their best.
This film seems to pay tribute to older films like El CID in both religious themes, storytelling, and pacing. I have long enjoyed this movie since its theatrical release and continue to find it both a sobering and difficult watch; but also an incredibly inspiring one.
Also James Horner's score for this film slaps.
It is highly apparent that a lot of time and effort was put into For Greater Glory, a truish story about the 1920s Cristero War that ravaged Mexico because of the nation's atheistic government practically declaring war on the European-influenced Roman Catholic religion that had become the religion of the land. It is highly dramatic and features some beautiful cinematography of stunning vistas and views; but the film is a dud ... because of poor dialogue and even poorer direction.
You always know you are watching a great film (sarcasm alert!) when Hispanic/Latino actors speak in English unless they say "gracias" or count to five.
For Greater Glory is not well-made and it had hopes that nobody would notice as…
"Viva Christo Rey!"
As a Catholic, I am always annoyed who movies that want to religious themes are usually terrible. They usually fall into preachy nonsense with poor filming techniques. This film follows suit. No substance to the story and not very emotionally evocative as it thinks it is. Oscar Issac is the only good performance in this movie, while others portray 2-D characters that serve their generic purposes.
Alternate title 1: Poe Dameron and Vincent Corleone Kill Mexicans
Alternate title 2: Catholics V. Mexicans: Dawn of Bad Acting
Alternate title 3: Awkward Slow-Mo: The Movie
Also contains the worst editing and most awkward ending to a film ever.
Making historical fiction compelling is hard; making faith-promoting art compelling is even harder. Attempt them together, and you've got a recipe for well-intentioned inertia. Dean Wright—a visual effects veteran making his feature directing debut—explores the Cristero War of 1926 - 1929, as a popular uprising of Roman Catholics fought against the harsh anti-clerical laws and policies of the revolutionary Mexican government. The narrative attempts to pull together the experiences of several characters, including a retired, agnostic soldier hired by the Cristeros (Andy Garcia), a priest-turned-fighter (Santiago Cabrera) and a young boy (Mauricio Kuri) turned from his rebellious ways by a kindly old priest (Peter O'Toole). Yet the film never coheres as anything more than a series of points on a…
Ovviamente.
Tale of two movies. The good performances and powerful content vs the awful editing and over the top plotting.
Przyszłość naszego Kina Narodowego? Przyzwoite aktrostwo boleśnie zły scenariusz tragiczna reżyseria a najgorsze ze wszystkiego udźwiękowienie
A lot of biased reviews here from cringeworthy atheists who let their view on religion get in the way of enjoying this film. Regardless of your religious views, you can appreciate this film and it's director for covering the most forgotten war in Mexico's history and the brutal prosecution of the Catholics in Mexico. Obviously like most films it isn't perfect, but it isn't a terrible film as some here make it out to be.
The very worthy epic picture For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada, directed by Dean Wright and written by Michael Love is a good illustration of why I rather resent movies which make claims on my critical judgment by presenting themselves, either explicitly or implicitly as "conservative." Ideologically, everything is done right in For Greater Glory, and it could not be more timely from the conservative point of view (and my view) of religious freedom, now that Catholic bishops are suing the government over the HHS mandate regarding compulsory provision of contraception. Nor is the movie’s propaganda anything like as crude as that of the anti-Catholic movies with which it makes such a refreshing contrast. But aesthetically it leaves…

VIVA CRISTO REI!

Part of the Oscar Isaac Filmography Trip I have going on, thanks to the quarantine.
Okay, so, full disclosure: I didn’t actually finish the movie.
But yes, I’m still giving it 1 star. Mostly because some of the non-Oscar scenes were pretty memorable and there was a shot in particular that just hits.
The main reason why I decided not to finish watching it was mostly the fact that I just couldn’t find myself really caring for the characters. Plus the pacing was a bit weird, especially in the beginning
(the exposition text in the beginning was definitely not necessary, since they went on and showed us everything that happened in-scene afterwards – twice).
Also, Oscar Isaac was kind of a catch. Which, I think, might have something to do with the mustache.
