This is not a bad movie.
It's not a great movie, either. It's cliched. It's corny. It's not well acted, and the writing could use a lot of work. But that's true of about 90% of movies, including many critical darlings and hugely popular films. There's not a single MCU film that isn't cliched, corny, badly acted, and badly written, yet they regularly rate highly with film snobs and the population at large. Confession... I really wanted to like this... I was really excited to write a contrarian review about how people that don't like Glitter are just dummies, but no... this is really quite bad. I don't know how you screw this up so bad... Is it Mariah's fault?

I don't get all the hate this movie gets. I really just don't understand it. It really is not that horrible. I mean it's no Oscar worthy movie but like it's NOT THAT BAD. I JUST WANT THE GLITTER HATE TO STOP.

Glitter is mildly fascinating because it is essentially the most stripped-down, bare-bones, fleshless version of the "rise to stardom" plot you can get. Technically, everything is there in the script: Sad backstory, the boosts of popularity, being swept up in the machine to lose who you are and where you came from, big emotional arguments, and the closing epic performance that's supposed to sell, like, a bajillion singles. But it's literally missing everything else: Performances, proper editing, connective tissue between scenes, momentum, style, flair, romantic chemistry, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera...most importantly, it's missing good music. Oh to be in a club in the 80’s dancing to a sped up remix of “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life” in a disastrous ensemble of a paper boy cap, braids, a purple vest OVER a red spaghetti strap tank top and 70’s shorts shorts to boot.

As a lifelong Mariah fan, I'm obligated to enjoy this film on some level. :) The plotting and acting is nothing special and the story seems to move along far too quickly, but it's definitely not the pile of garbage it's been made out to be. Certainly a great film to watch for fans of both Mariah and the 80s!
