this was one of the most joyous experiences i’ve had all year and no i’m not joking in the slightest
If Davis had any chemistry with delightful Stewart that would maybe salvage her bland character but she didn't. Then you have incredible Aubrey Plaza as the romantic alternative for Stewart's character and it's just mind-boggling where the story goes. As soon as the cameras rolled on Day 1 they should have noticed that and just turn this into lesbian Get Out where Stewart's lovely character is trapped in that house with a nightmare of a girlfriend and her weirdo family. Just imagine Levy's character arriving in the end and rescuing Stewart from all of this and that's it. Consider this situation fuckin' handled. That would be amazing.
Someone make an edit and replace all that cheerful, Christmas music with horror-style score. Then that film will make sense.
if i could go back in time and tell my younger self that one day i’d be watching something like this with my dad while we made a holiday dinner... i wouldn’t have believed it
Depicts what should be an extinction-level event in this relationship between what appears to be an endlessly patient victim (who seemingly has no cause to trust anyone we meet in this film) and a gaslighting narcissist. If this was about a hetero relationship you'd be foaming at the mouth in fury about the level of abuse. I liked the weird sister.
kristen stewart and aubrey plaza took “don we now our gay apparel” to another level in those suits
starting now every lesbian can have their own aubrey plaza and dan levy as gay emotional support friends as a treat
Substantial queer romantic comedy that made audience feel seriously festive. Clea DuVall managed to drew best performance from her cast, both individually and in groups. Stewart & Davis defined their 'openly or closeted' lives with undeniable chemistry.
We just seem to be in this caucasian lesbian PHASE right now. This movie isn't perfect but who else even exists in the generic gay rom com genre? I’m definitely here for the “leave her!” material from people upset about this being of the regressive, gay-pain-for-the-movies type. My dumbass still happy and comforted by the fact that they end up [redacted] !!f ITS A ROMCOM OK, PICKUP YOUR JAW
Yea, I too would love a happy rom com without the gayness being central to the story, but *pauses*, no actually yea, *pauses harder*… yea do that. Maybe we can swap out the formulaic, toxic-ish love stories and just get some funny, compelling, complicated, cute, all around good feeling queers up for viewing! In the meantime, this is a dumb christmas movie. Semi-delusional fluff never felt this hilarious or cute!
A surprisingly joyless Christmas movie with plenty of unlikable characters to make your holiday yuletide gay!
