Dolly Levi is a strong-willed matchmaker who travels to Yonkers, New York in order to see the miserly "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire" Horace Vandergelder. In doing so, she convinces his niece, his niece's intended, and Horace's two clerks to travel to New York City.

A year after Funny Girl in 1968, Barbra Streisand starred in Hello, Dolly! While I think that Funny Girl is certainly better, there are a few advantages to this one. First off, the use of visuals. There are some musical numbers here that flat out impressed me so much, I was simply transfixed by the beauty of the colors, tempo and choreography. The use of the production design was absolutely brilliant. Each set bursts with detail in terms of props, colors and space. It’s like every corner of every room was furnished and detailed, it’s seriously remarkable. You get a real sense of the environment here too. A lot of the dancing takes place…

sometimes I think about him, living alone in his trash trailer, rewatching this gorgeous movie over and over. he's the only thriving thing on a human-devastated earth, yet he yearns for the best of humanity watching ms. dolly levi sing and dance and charm laps around everyone in her proximity. anyway, for completely separate reasons, this is a supremely comforting movie to devote two and a half hours of attention to in 2018.
I cried during some of big dancing numbers, I love seeing humans committed to creating effortful spectacle. 4 stars.
The movie was antiquated upon its theatrical release. HELLO, DOLLY! came out in 1969. America was entrenched in the Vietnam War, the counterculture was at its apex, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix were top record sellers, and disillusionment was the vibe of the day. Then this lavish and extravagant throwback to Hollywood musicals, directed by none other than Gene Kelly (the star of so many of those musicals) comes to the theater and people did not know what to think.

Complicated gender norms pervade this. It's clear "It Takes a Woman" is intended as characterization of Mathau's character's misguided notions on love, women, and marriage, but the film never establishes his better qualities--never explains why Dolly is set on marrying him--except to say she wants to redistribute his wealth for him (and good for her, that's good ass praxis). His consent in that endeavor seems almost irrelevant to the film and when it's revealed, watering down her (not really that) radical intentions. Furthermore, every black character in this save Louis Armstrong is a racial caricature, and Armstrong is relegated to a submissive cameo himself. Not quite sure why Dolly Levi is so popular, other than her INCREDIBLE hats.
Surely it is not because of her lip-sync abilities.
The costumes! The sets! The choreography! Gene Kelly directing! BABS! Hello, Dolly! just brings me so much joy especially the Harmonia Gardens sequences.
Watched most of this on mute while my friends DJed, then turned the sound on for the last 4ish songs and realized the music is...not good! Though I got a kick out of the wild costumes and incredible choreography.
I love all the colours, costumes and the dancing in this film! The hats alone deserve a shout-out. Not my favourite musical but I did enjoy it.
Funny and cute. Musicals are such a lost art. I’d like to see this remade tbh. Great cast but I wish the boys were cuter. The styling of the costumes is so extravagant and all the dresses are so pretty! I’d literally die to be dressed like Dolly when she walks into the restaurant scene.
I love the put on your Sunday clothes song... but other than that it’s a forgettable musical that I only watched because Gene Kelly directed it and put on your Sunday clothes is from wall-e
was really boring. but the costumes were good and barbra looked gorgeous and the song with louis armstrong was iconic
