very interesting foil to Once Upon A Time in Hollywood's image of 1969 LA, as valerie solanas' attempted assassination of andy warhol occurred just one year earlier in NYC. both violent events marked the brutal death of the freewheeling 60s, and both were (peculiarly) committed by women.
director mary harron also recently released her latest film Charlie Says, which follows the manson girls as they reflect on their experiences with being brainwashed and controlled by charlie, while also learning to accept the reality of what they did. haven't seen it yet, so i can't speak to its quality/level…
It is clear why Lou Reed would be upset with this movie. His scathing rant of a song calls for Valerie Solanas's death, and it was written decades after the incident in question. It's a testament to Reed's ability to convey his pain and distress in such direct and simple lyrics. It's autobiographical, more than anything else, and even when he sings about how sickness not being an excuse, I don't hear the bloodlust and cry for vengeance, but the agony and regret (made all the clearer by the fact that he spends most of the song in his signature sing-talking about how Warhol remonstrated him for not visiting while he was in the hospital). Making for a damn near brilliant debut from American Psycho director Mary Harron, I Shot Andy Warhol is a beautifully acted, sharply written, and energetically put together story about rejection, jealousy, loathing, and pain that's as strange as it is powerful.
I was going to write a review but decided to make a playlist of music I listened to a lot in high school instead.

This is one of my favorite events ever. Radical feminism would never be as it is if it wasn't for Valerie's incredible commitment and intelligence! The SCUM Manifesto is a must read, and this film is of course a must watch, since Lili Taylor delivers one hell of a performance.

i saw this movie a long time ago and it suddenly popped up again randomly while i was thrifting.
i remember seeing it and being shocked, being somewhat angry, being confused, but most importantly transfixed by the imagery and the messages of Valerie Solanas and SCUM.
it would be easy to write off this occurrence as either heroic, sensational, tragic or melancholic but there’s this jarring, chaotic curiosity and simultaneous compassion for Solanas and Warhol that is quite astonishing.
it’s provactive...it gets the people going and for good reason.

The only reason I somewhat enjoyed this film is because I know a lot about Andy Warhol and his factory. I know this is an independent film, but everyone looked like a 99 cent store version of the person they were playing. The wigs were atrocious.
I remember reading a novel as a teen in which the protagonist watches this movie and then becomes very fascinated by it and I get it now
I will not rest until we as a society recognize Mary Harron as one of the great filmmakers of history
Was really interested in seeing this film, having been familiar with the real story and being more interested in Valerie Solanas as a person. I found the first 40 minutes were slightly tedious, mostly due to how "actor-y" the performances are, but sort of like watching a play you start to not notice that. I am glad to have watched it, but will probably wait a few years before I rewatch - although I might read the SCUM manifesto before then. Cool stuff!
