1994 Directed by Tetsuro Amino
A monster hunter goes after a beast that could be her brother.
90’s anime (3/5)
Full of inventive weapons, badass characters, slick animation, and a dope villain, this is some classic 90’s anime.
Made as a prequel to Zeiram (1991), this 6 episode OVA follows the badass and adorable bounty hunter Iria, as she faces off against the unstoppable killing monster Zeiram. Who may also be her brother. Awkward.
The best draw to this is the general design and look of the anime. It’s got that peak 90’s look with its own flair and style. I particularly loved both the designs for Iria and Zeiram.
The plot is a bit disconnected from episode to episode, but it doesn’t hurt the overall package. The main lead keeps happening upon this…
You know why I like anime? Because, in the 80's and 90's, it was all about 3 things: stealing from Hollywood blockbusters, making subtle jabs at society using tits and robots and getting away with all kinds of shit because it was animated. Anyone who says it's for kids hasn't seen that youtube video counting the curses in Angel Cop and it's our duty to remedy that when the opportunity reveals itself. Example of why anime is or used to be pretty dope: Iria: Zeiram the Animation. A 6-episode OVA prequel to a live action movie that itself is just an under-3 hour excuse to shoot guns, fly ships and have that same fucking Alien 3 reference that's in everything.…
Iria: Zeiram the Animation (1993)

So, here we are, October dying down and I'm still going at it with the October Overlook Madness. Hope you understand due to the circumstances that I had to do it this way. But, anyway... I don't know how many more reviews I'll do before the October craze goes down, and since I'm not going to Mar del Plata this year, my schedule will be a little more free to watch older films, so, who knows! Enjoy!
It's not usually common that I watch this much anime, specially not a full series in the midst of watching so many horror films, even if I love the genre and the format, is one that requires…
Aside from some very solid visuals and interesting fight sequences, this “prequel” (supposedly to 1991’s live-action Zeiram) is boring and 50% too long.
This anime is really awesome. It has a great story written by the underrated Keita Amemiya.
Incredibly innovative in its world building and technological weapons. Iria herself is one of the best female protagonists I've seen in anime and Zeiram is a scary looking creature. But there is also human turmoil involved between Iria and her brother. Basically, it's everything a 90's anime should be.

This’s would have been better suited as a film instead of a 6 episode series. It meanders too much and there is not enough material here to justify its length.
