Cute movie coming out of material I didn't expect. Had I known the kid's dad had died a few years earlier, I don't know if I would have added it to the immediate playlist. I watched this one with the girls tonight, and it could have been a downer. Just shy of an hour and a half was just right for length. I liked the payoff with the keys, but hated the over-explanation at the end. They should have ended it with him knocking at the door and no one answering. The "whole birthday as a setup years ago" was truly disappointing and took away from what was actually in the box.

I haven't seen this since I was about the age of the main characters — but I remember I loved it. The acting wasn't stellar (although it added a layer of honesty to this film that couldn't have been achieved any other way and it was very refreshing, almost like watching a play) but that wasn't what was important. The story was.
