so much lore. obsessed with lore. every goddamn franchise sequel these days is just focused on building out their internal wikipedias
there’s a scene at the start of this movie where a character’s phone shows the date as December 13th, 2019. I watched this movie on December 12, 2019. Is this set in the far-flung future of tomorrow?
Bringing in Awkwafina was a fun choice. Karen Gillan is a star.

Jake Kasdan's follow up to the 2017 action-adventure made for a very solid sequel and was much better than I had originally anticipated it would be.
TRIVIA: Saw one of the fastest turnarounds from filming…
As a Dutch kid English language films were off limits for a long time. This was not because I didn't want to see them, but it was mainly due to adults around me assuming I would not be able to understand the nuance of plots because my reading speed would not he fast enough for the subtitles. One of the first English spoken films I saw in the theatres was Back to the Future part 2. I was 12 and it was pure magic.
I vowed I would never do this to my kids and they'd be allowed to watch anything in any language they wanted, they'd get it. I was sure. And I, of course, like all parents, did…
me when i thought awkwafina and karen were gonna eventually kiss at some point and then they didn't: 🤡
Tired : Awkwafina in The Farewell
Wired : Awkwafina as Danny DeVito in Jumanji : The Next Level
Danny DeVito probably only had to work two days on this, but they got a whole film's worth of entertainment out of the Rock and Awkwafina doing fantastically mediocre Danny DeVito impressions.
my grandpa and i started this movie 30 minutes into it and without watching the first one but overall it was surprisingly good!
some good laughs
Unfortunately this is a fairly pointless sequel. Everything that made Welcome to the Jungle so great (ie. The translation of board to video game and the idea of avatars) is repeated here with less success. The best things here are the new. Two Hollywood legends are allowed a few wonderful minutes of actual screntime and Awkwafina is great as ever.
Performances, in general, are still soild, with some extra credit for the adoption of De Vito and Glover mannerisms but the plot is a tired tale, both in and out of the game narrative.
Some potentially good set pieces are let down by their reliance on CGI as is the final act which veers wildly into the bizarre. Yet another wasted opportunity for a iconic piece of source material.
Well leave it to Jake Kasdan to be the last thread of hope for the action adventure comedy! Of course he has one of the funniest films of all time in his CV, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
I really enjoyed the first one of these and this one was not a disappointment! I like that the story is compelling enough and then in the third act when you might think it's gonna sag a bit we get a pump of life in the form of a little status quo change, which is welcome. Pretty well plotted is how I would describe it.
We're going to look back in a few years and marvel at the cast of this.…
