An aspiring boxer becomes a competitive jump-roper, along the way learning to Follow His Dreams and Believe In Himself all while Getting The Girl. There's some admirable lessons here about toxic masculinity but with the sanitized Disney house style and familiar pat teen movie beats it can't help but come off as insincere to me, focus-grouped.
I say "comes off as" because I'm well aware that's just the personal knee-jerk reaction of a grumpy cynic. This movie isn't for me, and as a Trojan Horse to get these messages in to its intended young teen audience, it's probably a good time. But as someone with no particular nostalgia for this brand era, I just can't stop from shaking my head and sighing every few minutes.
