Freeman and Judd are good but the cinematography and the editing are absolutely hellish. Also I figured out who the killer is the second that actor showed up.
This is a fun popcorn thriller based on a really good book. It was written before James Patterson started churning them out on a monthly basis and I read it before seeing the movie. I ended up loving the movie as well and wanted to revisit it before my Starz subscription ends and dontcha know it still holds up for me after all this time.
Ashley Judd is great as a doctor who is kidnapped by a serial killer who collects women he “loves”. She manages to escape and then helps Morgan Freeman track the dude down. A big part of the reason I love this movie is that it takes place mostly in my home state of North Carolina…

I have a list of the movies I really want to watch or re-watch. But instead of sticking to that list, I get distracted and end up watching movies like Kiss the Girls because it's streaming on Amazon Prime and it's late at night.
What can I say? Kiss the Girls is as average as it gets. The film does not do anything poorly, but it also does not do anything memorable. Even the twist and the ending are just run-of-the-mill. If it was not for Morgan Freeman's voice, I would have forgotten the movie immediately after finishing it.
So why watch it? Well, it is late at night, and I was hoping to get creeped out. I heard there is a sequel, but there is no way I will watch it...I have my watchlist to go through right?! But maybe...if it's late at night...
Director Gary Fleder captures the breezy, airport novel plot of the James Patterson book and translates it into its cinematic equivalent: the breezy popcorn thriller. But that’s not a complaint. Casting is on point, but it’s Fleder’s workmanlike direction that gives this a lasting resonance. He manages a nice balance between the dark elements and the entertainment factor, and by emphasizing character he elevates it over CSI-type dreck. He also maintains a creepy atmosphere throughout, which creates a welcome unpredictability.
The nineties had a bunch of these psychological procedurals, and I’ve always been a fan. Kiss the Girls is one of the better ones. Too bad the sequels didn’t fare as well. Watched via Paramount Pictures Blu-ray.
In a nutshell:
* Morgan Freeman is perfect casting, cool & engaging. Ashley Judd also does a strong job as co. The supporting cast are all solid/believable as well 🎭
* Gary Fleder does a good job in the Directors chair. Nothing fancy, but competent & fitting 🎥👏
* Mark Isham delivers an effective score, the violin over the opening credits is eerie, very complimentary to the material 🎵
* Tight script, likeable protagonists & creepy/interesting antagonist. Nice tone/atmosphere, a murder mystery done well. They don’t make films like this anymore 📝
* Kept me invested, no trimming needed 👌
* Re-watchable 📺
* Love the climax 🥛💥
Not as dark as Seven - more in the vein of The Bone Collector (1999), but better in my opinion. An enjoyable whodunnit with a solid cast.

Looking back on this film now, the comparisons between Casanova and Harvey Weinstein here are plain for all to see. It was during this film that Judd claimed that Weinstein sexually harassed her, so it must have been tough going on and off the set of this film for the now 52 year old actress. Judd had a few years in the spotlight, made some generic but entertaining thrillers and dramas before her career tailed off. She's stated on more than one occasion that Weinstein had threatened to curtail her career when she rebuffed his sexual advances, and it just goes to prove what a prick he was, because she's a pretty decent actress who deserved much better than to…

A proficient entry in the Ashley Judd/airplane fiction genre of the mid-'90s to early '00s. Suffers greatly from the "Law & Order" guest-star syndrome (if a recognizable actor is playing third banana most of the movie, you can bet he's the secret villain). I can see why Judd dominated this formula for years, she can project nearly any type of vulnerability or tenacious determination that a character requires, without the plot ever taking a backseat. I do still find the "attractive young white woman teams with wise older black man investigator" trope really oddly specific, especially when there's little to no acknowledgement of race in the context of law enforcement, serial killer behavior, or the Carolina setting.

After the disappointment of The Little Things I felt like my 90s serial killer thriller itch had yet to be scratched so I took a chance on this Freeman and Judd classic and it's also a hot mess. But a quick glance at Goodreads makes me think it's somehow an improvement over the James Patterson source material. Yikes.
What always surprises me about Kiss the Girls is that it’s not nearly as graphic as you’d expect and it’s great. It’s nice not to see senseless brutality against women onscreen, we know it’s happening and don’t need to see it. Gary Fleder does a good job with this movie, the chase through the woods was really exciting and I wish that had been the end instead of the obvious reveal.
