Watched this on an iPhone while inhaling two rubbery 75¢ hot dogs without condiments in an Ikea parking lot.
I bet Ringo Starr loves the shit out of this. He probably sat there watching the movie and nudging his friends in the side with the biggest grin on his face. "Ahhh, they LAVA each other", he says at the close of the short film.
When he arrives home later that night he begins to compose a rock opera on the love of Volcanoes because he is so touched by the great act of love between these two mountains.
Paul McCartney gets a phone call at 1 AM from an exceedingly excited Ringo Starr, and he sits there politely listening to his friend recount the story of the movie he just saw and offers to listen to the first few ideas for songs he has for his album of Lava love songs.
Hours later, Paul and Ringo end their conversation. Paul flicks off his bedside lamp and utters into the darkness one phrase.
"Jesus fucking christ"
Those two volcanoes banged and gave birth to Te Fiti. This was all a prequel to Moana
Easily one of the weirdest shorts I've ever seen. I've been debating for the past few days on whether I even liked it or not, and although it is quite annoying in stretches, I found the film as a whole to be sweet and calming in the best way.
Several compositions in Lava are absolutely stunning, and with the combination of the miraculous animation, the finished product looks gorgeous. Although I don't want that song stuck in my head, I can't wait to watch this again just for some of the most haunting imagery in a Pixar short.
Also, the majority of my audience was crying by the end of this. Trust me, I swear Pixar just put this short in front of Inside Out as a way of preparing you for the emotional devastation of the main feature.
This short was bad enough already, with its tacky animation and insipid songwriting, and then Mt. Dolezal or w/e burst from the sea in all her white-girl-dreads glory and I nearly said "Fuck you" in a theater full of toddlers.
It's a good thing the lady volcano has boobs and long hair otherwise we might not know she's a lady.
"I have a dream, I hope will come true, that you'll grow old with me and I'll grow old with you...I lava you."
This Pixar short that was presented before Inside Out was directed by James Ford Murphy and it feels more like a music video clip than an actual short because the story was told entirely through the lyrics of a song. Performed by Kuana Torres Kahele and Napua Greig the lyrics tell the story of a lonely volcano in the middle of the sea that dreamt of finding his other half. As time passed his lava turned into stone and was slowly eroding under the sea, but that hopeful song wasn't unheard, because under the sea was another…

In recent years, these shorts have gotten more twee, more pointless, and for some reason they have become hamfistedly cosmic in their character selection. We've had babymaking clouds, an actual battle between Night and Day, and now a heteronormative myth about plate tectonics. Is anyone actually enjoying these?
Pixar provides such rudimentary conflicts for its astronomical, geological, or meteorological avatars that they could really be anything. Perhaps Cars 5 will be preceded by a chance meeting on a dissecting table of an umbrella and a sewing machine, and we can call it a day.
I guess the Tex Avery madness that was Presto was a fluke. It was also a miracle.
What did I just watch? I mean, I get it's for kids, but seriously? This was a terrible short that would've given me a nightmare if I were much younger.
It's weird that at this point saying "this isn't the worst thing in the world" sounds like praise, but that's the kind of vibe I've been getting. The animation is impressive as usual (the fake time lapse clouds in particular), and I found the song occasionally charming (some genius discovered that "love" kinda sounds like "lava" and built a song around it). The story flirts with existential darkness in a way it never earns, but it's not going to ruin your life to watch it before Inside Out.
i held back tears so hard during this. i didn’t cry, but got a huge headache from the tears i held in
gonna try to learn this on the ukelele, though i will probably fail. also, i don’t understand why a lot of people hated this? i thought it was lovely. or should i say, lava-ly.
man i thought this was cute and then i read some of the reviews... people are that angry about singing volcanoes?? i thought the pun was so cute!!
I remember everyone loved this when it first came out and said it was so cute and all I could think was "meh"
I guess I understand the criticism.
But I started crying about a minute in and didn't stop until the credits. Was I manipulated? Possibly, but it wasn't like some light tears and maybe a sniffle. It was a full-throated sob, capped off with "THE VOLCANOES ARE TOGETHER AND THEY'LL BE HAPPY, I LIKE VOLCANOES THEY DESERVE TO HAVE LOVE JUST LIKE PEOPLE".
Third Watch (1/19/21):
A rare miss for Pixar at the time. The animation is a step down for them, the song is lazily written, and the story itself is pretty cheesy and uncreative.
