Boy, did this age about as well as a pair of sweaty socks.
I first saw this when I was about twelve and hadn't seen it since. I remembered really loving it then. I guess all of its magic is lost on me now.
I will say this, it still looks amazing. It has a kind of ethereal glow that is very appealing and the make up and set pieces are wonderful. And yes, Tim Curry steals the show completely as the devilish bad guy.
And that's about as positive as I can be. Everything just feels dull. The plot is straightforward and predictable. It lacks and enormous amount of creativity. But the dullness is best reflected in Cardboard Cruise's performance. He lacks any form of charisma here which makes it nearly impossible to root for him.
I can still see why I liked it then, but every spark of movie magic has now completely vanished I'm afraid.
