This was highly enjoyable to watch. I’m very glad this happened.
Marisa Tomei is TOO GOOD. Jamie Foxx kills it, literally fucks up & it’s even better for it. Plus ya know WANDA SYKES!
The Jeffersons came off better than All in the Family. Woody was completely miscast.
I'd rather have more One Day at a Time but this'll do!
Jamie Foxx is the clear MVP here. Marisa Tomei gets a respectable second because I love her. Woody Harrelson, whatever.
I wanna see more re-creations of old sitcoms.
Very enjoyable, it's so wrong that sitcoms from decades ago are still light years beyond shitcoms of today. But this live recreation proves just that. All the actors acquit themselves well enough. With clear standouts being Jamie Foxx and Marisa Tomei who nailed their respective characters, Jennifer Hudson for a superb rendtion of a classic theme song, and Marla Gibbs for being Marla Gibbs. She's awesome
Movie #2366: Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons’
I’ve watched this twice but I’m only gonna log this once. This TV special honoring the great works of Norman Lear by recreating them is as fun and relatable as it was in the 1970s. I’m just surprised it’s just as good as it was back then. The humor and heart works and it doesn’t feel soulless like tv sitcoms today. However, there’s a few flubs and a few jokes that don’t land but those are so few and far between that it doesn’t make make too much of a difference. It also loses a bit for being a remake, even if it’s got an all star cast. Still brilliant. Hope they do more of these in the future. 4/5
Jimmy Kimmel did a great job assembling the talented ensemble cast of celebrities to perform in the two-part “live in front of a studio audience” re-creation of two original episodes from Norman Lear’s classic tv shows “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” (both which aired on CBS) for the ABC network.
All in the Family: S04E06: Henry’s Farewell 10/20/1973
The Jeffersons: S01E01: A Friend in Need 01/18/1975
I wonder if he got this idea from the 40th Annual Kennedy Center Honors tribute to receipient Norman Lear in 2017 during Rob Reiner’s segment before the semi-re-created set. One of the more noticeable flubs was from Jaime Foxx as George Jefferson in his short appearance in the first half of “All in…
Very interesting look at the way some things have changed and some things haven’t. Lears writing holds up.
Two things:
1) Gloria is way off. She acts like Archie's her racist neighbor, not her dad that she loves. She's way too modern. Miscasting, for sure. Probably the only miscasting, strangely. Everybody else did great. If they weren't spot-on, they at least did a decent imitation.
2) I can't believe of all people the only one who flubbed their line was Jamie Foxx! Oscar-winning, stand-up comic, game show host, former In Living Color cast member Jamie Foxx! If I had bet on who I thought would have messed up during the live taping, he would have been very low on my list. Aside from that, he was excellent. And he did handle it well, for the record.
Oh and…
While you can't beat the chemistry of the original casts, the actors, producers and directors did a pretty damn good job recreating these episodes, and it's amazing how the episodes are still relevant today. I think the best was Marisa Tomei as Edith. She was able to capture Edith's spirit and personality, without resorting to just doing an impression.
Forgot to log this back when I watched it. I have limited experience with the original shows but I enjoyed this well enough to want to find some more episodes where they’re available. Of the leads, Woody felt miscast, Tomei is hilarious until she starts overdoing it, Foxx is distracting, and Wanda Sykes feels the most natural. By that I mean that she feels like the only one playing her role instead of playing the original actor playing the role. Good supporting turns too from the likes of Barinholtz and Anderson. If it gets younger generations interested in Norman Lear’s work, I’m glad it exists. Without a doubt, the writing still holds up today.
I'd rather have more One Day at a Time but this'll do!

I liked Woody Harrelson as Archie Bunker and Jaime Foxx was an ok George ( except he kept flubbing his lines and hamming it up a little too much). For a live show there were too many mistakes (you can see the boom mic in several scenes). My problem with this kind of show is that it can never hold up to the originals, so why do it. Just watch the originals, they are easier to find and oddly enough better produced.
Really enjoyable return to the sitcoms of old. Everybody played their roles well but Jamie Foxx was the stand out
I watched this with my grandmother, who loved both shows when they were on. She said the actors did great impressions of the original. I think this special was pretty good,it was like watching history or something (I’ve never seen the originals.) I think they should make more of these..
