Ma Ma. 2015. Directed by Julio Medem.
Julio Medem’s family oriented tale about a mother Penelope Cruz (Magda) who is struggling with breast cancer. This isn’t an average cancer movie. Magda is a strong, loving, and intelligent woman who wants to be loved. Her husband has regular affairs with students. Magda, on the other hand, meets Arturo (Luis Tosar) as he lost his wife and daughter in a car accident. Magda’s gynecologist, Julian (Asier Etxeandia) is not one’s average gynecologist. He has a delightful bedside manner and actually cares for his patients. Ma Ma has adequate cinematography and effects but, this film’s heart and soul comes from the actors and the script. This is one of my favorite cancer films that deals with death and rebirth.
