Saw it last night at a sold-out show at the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre. Had a blast. Wholly original, hypnotic, brutal, beautiful, trippy, etc, etc, etc... everything you now expect from Panos Cosmatos.
Performances are fantastic. Andrea Riseborough is quickly becoming one of my faves.
See this on the big screen.
If this was 80 minutes long it'd be the movie bro catnip you crave: visually completely dazzling, exceptionally violent and unpleasant, frequently hilarious (intentionally or not, depending on your level of ironic detachment), and loaded with mega-Cage. But that extra 40 gives you plenty of time to think about how wickedly, unnecessarily slow, completely corny and affected, and vaguely misogynistic it all is. I'd be lying if I didn't say this was a good time, the Yes album cover demonic hypno-drone is pretty much unimpeachable, but whatever Cosmatos thinks he's up to he could sure stand to lighten the fuck up a little.
if this film were any more metal* they'd have to mine it out of the Earth before each screening.**
*yes it's me, the ultimate authority on what is and isn't metal / the kid who bought Metallica's "Reload" in 7th grade, listened to the first song a few times, and moved on to the dark recesses of emo without ever looking back.
**but seriously MANDY is super metal. delighted it exists. Andrea Riseborough and Nicolas Cage both give performances as good as any i've seen this year.
Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s GHOST RIDER, scored with dronecore stoner metal. Paint this whole movie on the side of a fucking conversion van.
ME LAST NIGHT AFTER MANDY: i don't know what the fuck that was. it was slow and bewildering and a bit more boring than i expected. but it was also really beautiful? whatever. i'm tired
ME JUST NOW AFTER READING THE SYNOPSIS AND WATCHING THE TRAILER AGAIN: oh sick so i can just rent this thing and watch it again on google play right now?
as much as i think this is a beautiful thing to watch in a theater, it's also the kind of dark, deliberate watch that i would've probably enjoyed more if i watched it at home. very surprised at how straight-forward this movie was plot-wise, given how wild it is every single other aspect

Mandy was someone who had been through some shit, some horrible shit and she came out scarred but alive, able to read and draw and dream and sleep and get high and listen to metal. Life was difficult and heavy but finally possible. She had someone who she loved and could live with. Her trauma was subsiding and becoming integrated into her daily life. Her nightmares at night weren't quite as bad anymore. Only once or twice a month now would she wake up, sheets clenched in her fist, having to get up and go to the bathroom and smoke a bowl staring out into the rainy night, having to collect herself before going back to bed and getting through…
fuck everyone who doesn’t think nicolas cage is one of the most tender actors alive
The color grading/lighting/framing/directing and EDITING make this worthy of 5 stars. I really can’t wait to see what Panos Cosmatos does next.
There is a supremely magical moment in this film that never gets old for me: Nic walks into a 70s sitcom bathroom (complete with shag carpeting), in briefs and a tiger baseball tee, he's covered in blood and just starts pounding straight vodka he got from under the sink and screaming. That right there is pure cinema.
What even is there to say about Mandy, it's the most traumatic movie I've seen in years and I will probably have people come over to watch it as often as possible for the rest of my life. Do not watch if you live in the woods... Or for that matter think about while you are in the woods.
