Robert Z'Dar as Officer Matt Cordell, a policeman with a slight misunderstanding of the Justice System in William Lustig's sequel to the cult classic Maniac Cop. 211. Sawed off shotty. Bootleg suicide by cop. Lucky lotto. Ash without his Army of Darkness. Robert Davi's swagger. I would let early 90's Claudia Christian psychoanalyze me any day of the week. Darth Vader's dad. The way Maniac Cop 2 just doesn't give a flying fuck, and hits you straight in the throat. Morgue boobs. I wish I had Robert Davi's top hat. Repoed Repo Man. Bo Dietl's method acting. If you go on a road trip, don't forget to feed your goldfish. Grand Theft Taxi. Going all Leatherface on a motherfucker. Goofy…
Lists I have to update after seeing Maniac Cop 2:

Best horror/action hybrid movies
Best stunts in a horror/action hybrid movie
Best Christmas movies
Best end-movie rap songs
Best movies featuring an Italian Zach Galifianakis as a friendly serial killer
My friend pointed out that this passes the "Bechdel test." I'm going to pretend I don't know what that is and assume that it's the test in which a stuntwoman is strapped to the outside of a speeding car as it hits small ramps and swerves in and out of traffic. In that case, yes it passes. With flying colors.
After watching 1 and 2 back to back, I gotta say... I used to prefer this one but this time around I think I slightly prefer the suspense vibes of the OG Maniac Cop.
This is still pretty great though—I love that Robert Davi looks like he rolled out of an ashtray covered in whiskey and bar floor piss, and Claudia Christian rules here—that handcuffed to the car sequence is nuts! What this does have that’s lacking from the first film is a more inventive side... classic 80’s style sequel excess... crazy action setpieces with world building, more explosions, more fire, secret serial killer hideout, weirdo Cohen characters, an upgraded Zdar look (love his makeup here!), and Leo Rossi going…
I think the reason I never watched these when I was younger is that the vhs art didn’t really appeal to me. None of them look especially horror-esque but this one especially looks more like a cop action thriller and kid me wanted straight horror, preferably slasher, which you really can’t tell these are based on the cover art alone. But I was missing out because these are great!!
I can’t decide if I like this or the first one better, but damn that scene with Claudia Christian handcuffed and hanging out of a car while it flies down the highway is some truly inspired, top shelf stuff and I was sweating!
Robert Davi kinda looks like he smells like some Aqua Velva Ice Blue and a Marlboro somebody smoked half of and then stuck in their jacket pocket for later. Love all those scenes of seedy 80’s Manhattan, such glorious sleaze.
Maniac Cop is gritty, Maniac Cop 2 is trashy.
I hate when sequels start off with a clip from the previous film as a recap, especially when it was made only two years prior. I understand they probably just wanted to show the death-defying final stunt of the first film one more time, but is it really necessary? Later in the film we're treated to the Cordell flashback scene...again, which is a bit annoying if you're watching the films back to back.
I haven't seen the third film but it appears to me that Maniac Cop 2 is acting as a bridge between a monstrous killer cop to a good guy and I find the inconsistency rather disgusting. The character…
13/32: 6 directors - William Lustig
“One bright day in the middle of the night, Two dead boys got up to fight;
Back to back they faced each other, drew their swords and shot each other.
A blind man came to watch fair play,
A mute man came to shout “Hooray!”
A deaf policeman heard the noise and
Came and killed those two dead boys”
The original Maniac Cop has always been a bit of an oddity for me. With the powerhouse duo of William Lustig (Maniac) directing and Larry Cohen (God Told Me To) writing, and a cast that includes Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead), Tom Atkins (Night of the Creeps), Richard Roundtree (Shaft),…
I'll be damned. This situation is best described with Al Johnson's eternal words: "Wait a minute. Wait a minute. You ain't heard nothing yet." but in this case it's "seen" and instead of toot toot tootsie we got William Lustig on stage, whipping out one of the best sequels of all time. This is The Dark Knight of the Maniac Cop series, I shit you not. One brilliant scene after another. Far too awesome, awesome, awesome than this poster has suggested. You know I'm serious when I say "awesome" three times. It's not even "so bad it's good" -- a phrase, as I've stated in my Sleepaway Camp II review, that I don't believe in.…

One William Lustig Film
Maniac Cop 2 may be from 1990, but you still feel its 80's flick roots through and through. I dig the atmosphere...the sets and cinematography really cradle the urban grit of New York City like a good Larry Cohen production will do. But then we've got Bill Lustig unleashing his unstoppable undead giant-jawed killer cop onto the scene, with the director's skillful controlled mayhem delivering one solid, crazy stunt piece after another. The shattered glass budget on this film alone must have been enormous.
Robert Z'Dar as the Maniac Cop of the title and series newcomer Robert Davi as the detective trying to stop him are both titans in their…

Welp. It was actually a bit better than the original. I still struggle on what kind of story was going on here since they’re kinda rehashing what happened previously. But nonetheless I like the world building of it and it’s returning characters.
It definitely helped to get Robert Davi & Claudia Christian onboard since their characters were better than everyone in the first film and they’re just a slight more decent actors. Oh I forgot to mention this in my Maniac Cop review but the stunts on these films are fucking gorgeous and hate to see they don’t get that much recognition. The scene on here involving handcuffs & a car on neutral going downhill was bombastic!
Slightly better than its predecessor but once again no memorable deaths, sleazy atmosphere and I’m just not all that invested in the story after since it tends to retread familiar bland ground.
Quickie: This is a fun one, arguably more fun than the first. Though I still prefer the first one over this. This movie is just not as well made as the first. It reuses a lot of footage from part one and has some pretty bad lighting issues. Additionally I just find it to be a lot less inspired than the first but it's a horror sequel so I guess that just comes with the territory. It's still a total blast to watch though and there are ton of crazy and memorable moments. Overall, not bad. :) 6/10

Maniac Cop Double Bill #2
Maniac Cop 2 (1990)
If you thought it was over, you were sadly mistaken. Robert D'Zar is back as the Maniac Cop, and this time, he's up against Robert Davi.
Maniac Cop 2 picks off exactly from where the first left off, where Matt Cordell having sunk into a river, rises out to continue his murderous crime spree across New York, killing Jack Forrest and allying himself up with a serial killer of strippers. With Forrest out the picture, it's now the job Lieutenant Sean McKinney (Davi) to put a stop to his reign of terror.
While I didn't enjoy this as much as the first for some reason (maybe…
Boffo return of Cordell
If the first movie was a B movie that was self-aware, then maniac cop 2 is a sequel that is a B movie that is even more self-aware and actually succeeds in a being a good movie.
Honestly i rank it as one of the best movie sequels ever :) Its so violent, corny, cheesy, Full of sex and violence and a shootout at a police station which i will never forget. Maniac cop 2 has the right to remain alive forever.
Pretty much the best thing in this film is the lady from Babylon 5 just playing the same character she did in that with the exact some vibe and reading her lines with the exact same intonation.
Couldn't finish this because it's so boring, but then read on wikipedia that they retconned Cordell to be the good guy? What the fuck
A b movie with a slight twist, wow! And then every action sequence is totally just crazy and fun? Double wow! Also these themes aged like wine, chef's kiss.
But what seals it is the rap theme song.
Wow, I didn’t expect to have that much fun with the second part of Maniac Cop. If you ever asked yourself how far a cop can be tossed, here you’ll get several valid answers. we even get some emotional moments with the alleged villain.…
Only enjoyable if you like people on fire, Bruce Campbell, movies set at Christmastime, strippers, explosions, end credits rap sequences, Danny Trejo, chainsaw fights, gritty cops, unexpected friendships and some solid jump scares.
Otherwise not too much to mention..!
My favorite installment of the trilogy. There are some terrific stunts in this film and Lustig directs the action well.
It’s kind of an odd choice to bring back the heroes from the first film only to kill them off in the early-going, but it is an effective plot device. Plus, Davi and Christian step-up and fill the void nicely. Actually, it’s great to see Davi play a good guy (sorta) for once.
In all, a ton of crazy fun!
I honestly liked this movie more than the first one. These Maniac Cop movies are underrated and are a hidden gem. Maniac Cop 2 was pretty brutal with the kills.
*Maniac Cop exists*
Halloween II and Maniac Cop 2:
Underrated b level
Slasher franchise and this is arguably its best installment. Brutal madman killer cop.
The film starts off with a recap of what happened at the end of the original Maniac Cop and this leads to the police force believing that Matt Cordell drowned and his body got washed away. Well, they are wrong as he is back on the streets of New York doing what he does best, by seeking revenge on his fellow officers, unexpected citizens and on those crooked authorities who framed him. But his not alone on this crusade, as he's joined by a jolly serial killer. So, it's up to detective Sean McKinney and police psychologist Susan Riley to put a stop to this macabre madness.
