sofia coppola: we are going to clear up that marie antoinette did not say "let them eat cake"
set designer: that's cool and all, but shouldn't we take these converse shoes out of the shot
sofia: what is this, a documentary?
if you disagreed with the alt rock soundtrack because it's anachronistic you're probably a boring person to be around
“I’m saying goodbye.”
Sofia Coppola has always known what the fuck she’s doing. She knew what she was doing whenever she wrote this movie, she knew what she was doing when she decided the soundtrack. And by God, she knew exactly what she was doing whenever she directed the fuck out of this.
And on paper, this movie sounds like it would be a royal mess. A period piece about “The Bad Queen” herself with an alt-rock soundtrack? But, by luck, you add Sofia Coppola’s name to it, and out comes one of the most brutally honest, funny, and surprisingly relatable films I’ve ever seen. It’s been exactly one year since my first viewing of this, but now I can confidently say this is Sofia Coppola’s best film, and one of the best films ever made.
marie antoinette: i have done nothing wrong, ever, in my life.
me: i know this, and i love you.
“In the end we had pieces of the puzzle, but no matter how we put them together, gaps remained. Oddly shaped emptiness mapped by what surrounded them, like countries we couldn’t name. What lingered after them was not life, but the most trivial list of mundane facts. A clock ticking on the wall, a room dim at noon, the outrageousness of a human being thinking only of herself.”
— “The Virgin Suicides”
Sofia Coppola didn’t write the searching, wonderstruck narration that ends “The Virgin Suicides,” but it often feels as though her entire body of work has been devoted to clarifying that crucial passage from the Jeffrey Eugenides novel on which she based her directorial debut. Filling its gaps. Deepening…
when you give teenagers complex regal expectations (including foreign policy and battle command), but no real instruction beyond superficial customs things are gonna go bad, man. people have criticized her for it time and time again but i think there's something deeply fascinating about the way coppola indulges in, and then meditates on, the frivolity of the (french monarch) trust fund kids here--between the systemic artifice of the monarch and how well (and naturally) she wears it, this is a compelling painting of antoinette's superficiality as a tragedy not of her own making... entirely, at least.
movie studio execs: okay so what we’re looking for is a historically accurate biopic about the rise and fall of marie antoinette
sofia coppola: ok but hear me out...... the color pink
movie studio execs: shit u rite here’s 40 million dollars
According to Rotten Tomatoes this is officially Sofia Coppola’s worst film yet, despite its critical mauling and disappointing commercial results, I actually think it is her best film to date. Perhaps people have problems with the revisionist history, the the blending of stately heritage and pop songs or the fact it never quite delves deep enough into her character but for me the much documented ‘faults’ are also its greatest assets.
The first thing that hits you, after the attention grabbing Gang of Four track that plays over the black and pink opening credits, is the stunning photography by Lance Acord. The film positively revels in the opulence and wealth of the time with a pastel colour palette not too…
this movie is so lovely & sweet & good that it actually made me feel sad for the rich people
I love me a meandering film but I felt like, at a point, this one kinda lost the thread. I think it was right when the Strokes started playing and I laughed? I didn’t mind the soundtrack before that so idk.
Love it. Coppola's decision to mix American accents with more vaguely European sounding ones does a greta job of working against the usual pretense of most period pieces. It's the type of movie I wish I could roll around in. Gorgeously shot with some inspired editing. Also, this perhaps has my favorite soundtrack ever? It's not just that I like the songs, but the way they're used, especially in conjunction with the type of classical music you'd expect from this type of film, is just perfect. Kirsten Dunst is beyond perfect for this role and it's easily my favorite performance of hers. Politically, it's really the epitome of white feminism, but beyond that it's a pure treat. I cannot wait to revisit this in years to come.
Groundbreaking, beautiful, amazing, stunning, touching, inspiring. I think this was my 25th viewing since it came out! That’s amore 😚🤌
This a movie about Marie Antoinette that's happening in the 18 century and it had the fucking strokes on the soundtrack.
5 stars.
Truth is I finished Bridgerton last night and still wanted more of that ~vibe~ and I saw this on my watchlist so I went for it. Couple of unorganized thoughts. That nothing but the fan and stockings scene was hot. I love the sex appeal of an almost burlesque-y moment. Also, Tom Hardy is in this??? Took me a while to figure it out. And the costume designer Milena Canonero did such a good job. She went on to be the costuming designer for The Grand Budapest Hotel and I just think that’s really cool.
fuckin delightful. i love an anachronistic period piece and i'll die on that hill. the colors, the costumes, the vibes, the elitism ugh cant get enough. i also love when european summers are immortalized in such visceral ways. i'm gonna give it my best to try to get blackout drunk from drinking champagne out of a coupe glass, while wearing a petticoat, and listening to the strokes in a field this year.
i also forgot that marie antoinette was austrian?? my i-got-a-4-on-the-AP-euro-test ass is quaking. in one of the first scenes she has to give up her Pug (named mops which is german for pug) and i was like fuck she was really out here speaking german before she became such an emblematic figure of french culture. u learn somethin new everyday.
being royalty is overrated!
this is more of a 3.75/5 for me and i don’t know whether that means i should give it 3.5 or 4 stars or none at all. felt like watching more kirsten dunst and this did the trick. beautifully shot.
