Truly a dream alive on the screen. Continues to be immensely influential - so much so that naming all the examples could result in its very own click-bait list (I'm sure there's already one out in the wild) - and each frame is lush, crisp, and inventive in a way that is astonishing - even more so today. The final 20 minutes, combined with the tremendous Alloy Orchestra score reverberating within the theater, are as climatic as cinema gets, rising towards the heavens, a hero fully reborn.
Still as magnificent, scary, and thought provoking, Metropolis is epic and timeless.
Just as with Harold and Maude, this film holds a very special place in my heart given when I first watched it. I first saw this movie in high school, just out of curiosity and it blew me away. It really garnered my love for classic film. I remember searching for a good place to watch the newly restored and complete version of the original film, and staying up until 1:30 to watch it. It opened my eyes to another time and place, having the same struggles and desires as I do, watching this 90 year old film. Film is an amazing time capsule in that way.

Fuck this film. Fritz Lang is a really lazy director. One of his films was just called M! Jebuzz Cripes! The guy couldn't be fucking arsed to write a proper title for his bullshit, and all of the characters were talking in a made up language and there was writing all over the screen and I heard a rumour that this guy is a German! Possibly the most celebrated director from Germany's school of expressionism, Fritz Lang unfolds Metropolis in a procession of impressive scenes and it’s an undeniable science-fiction classic. Written by Thea von Harbou, in collaboration with Lang, it commenced principal photography in 1925 and evolved unique ideas and techniques for the science-fiction genre.
From the enormous design and scale of the Art Deco sets to it’s governmentally fused medieval themes, along with the remarkable strangeness of the imagery conveyed by the elegant mechanical replicant by Brigitte Helm, it’s the astonishing design of the movie that continues as its genuine distinction, which is even present in the maze-like intricacies of the employees' residence. Fritz Lang creates a haunting conception of industrial industry and it’s accompanied by a beautiful and original score by Gottfried Huppertz.
It’s baffling to me how a complete version of this movie was never restored until 2010. Even in that version, a lot of the footage was damaged or completely missing. In regards to that, the damaged footage would still be shown in its lowest quality, and the lost footage would be replaced by intertitles to explain what you’re supposed to be seeing.
It’s a shame because this is easily one of the greatest films released from the 1920s. Black-and-white cinematography has never looked better. This time, Fritz Lang’s set designs and world-building are at a massive scale, and he has clearly honed this skill to near perfection. Metropolis is a gargantuan tale of epic biblical proportions that absolutely deserves all its acclaim. Massively influential and consistently engaging, it just continued to wow me. For its time, the art design, cinematography, effects, score are all simply amazing. They remain timeless and hard hitting.
The narrative is spellbinding and as you watch it, so many films you’ve seen before pop into your head as you realise this came well before all of them. There are some scenes that I’ll never forget such as the hallucination scene where it is unprecedented what they do to create these effects. Having physically experimented with celluloid film to achieve extremely basic effects myself, I have no idea how they did some of these things.
A two and half hour silent film might seem like work to some but this sure wasn’t for me. It’s on YouTube so go check it out and tick it off the essential viewing list if you haven’t.

Metropolis has a whole heck of a lot going on. Class conflict, generational squabbles, unchecked scientific progress, spirituality and romantic notions, demagoguery and popular revolt. All of it melds together into an action packed dystopian melodrama on an epic scale. It apparently took Fritz Lang a whole year to make Metropolis, thousands of people were engaged as extras and it was the most expensive film he ever made.

Designs and angles that seem to stretch into the heavens above, making all the people look small and insignificant. And even more so than some of its contemporaries, “Metropolis” is big. Its size stretches beyond the limits of an imagination. It’s visually stunning, with a big world — literally spanning from the depths into the sky — to match its big story.

I was actually a little disappointed with Metropolis, partly I think because I've always considered it the first sci-fi epic when in reality it's barely a science-fiction film at all. I'm going to not give this film a rating,as though I personally didn't enjoy it,I can appreciate it and recognise the impact it had on my favourite genre of all time. It wouldn't be fair for me to drag the average rating of the film down,just based on me being a neandathal.
I found it's very true and brilliant when Metropolis's ending explains fascism's goal "maybe" predicted when the Nazi came into power; A godsend figure (Hitler) as the heart comes in and brings together the nation when it mediates between the workers and the capitalist as the ruling class. No wonder Goebbels and Hitler like this movie.
De film neemt een schitterende start, alleen al wat beelden betreft. In het middenstuk stuikt het allemaal wat in elkaar, maar het derde deel trekt dat dan weer recht.
Ach ja, het is er ook eentje uit 1927. Toen was dit zonder meer 145 minuten entertainend.

«Metropolis» es una película muda, te cuenta todo con acciones y con textos...la manera en como está creado todo me parece increíble para estos años, la mayoría esta hecho a mano con puros efectos prácticos, la historia te requiere mucha atención, en mi caso tengo que ver la película una vez más para entender más acerca de su contexto. Lo que también me gustó y me sorprendió es este punto crítico que tiene la película, critica al progreso humano hasta que vayan hundiendo el mundo en la distopia y critica a la revolución y el peligro que representa.
En general la película es buenisima y más profunda de lo que uno espera, un clásico absoluto

I was about to say this was my favourite silent film, but it turns out this is the only feature-length silent film I’ve seen. So it’s true, I guess.
So this was an interesting experience to say the least. Despite the distracting alternation between the crystal clear remastered footage and the badly damaged prints from Argentina, I still found this very easy to watch. The special effects were incredible, the score was fantastic, and that last half hour was tense as hell. The ending was riveting, although it would’ve been stronger without the intertitles spelling it out to the audience, especially since the rest of the film did a fantastic job of not doing that.
Not bad for one of the most influential movies of all time.
It feels almost sinful to give this film such a mediocre rating but, besides the amazing visual effects for the time and semi-intriguing story, this film really failed to hold my attention. I don’t have a problem with silent films as there are several i really enjoy but I just found this one to be very slow and not all that interesting.
