HBO’s Mildred Pierce is, among a handful of other stunning observations, a harsh portrait of a family poisoned by despair - more specifically, a total deconstruction of like-mother-like-daughter dynamics, in which mean-spirited plot points are integrated to form an unlikely relationship in the most unfathomable of ways.
Forget Titanic, this IS the role Kate Winslet was born to play, and no one else on the face of this earth could have complimented her moody yet poised portrayal of Mildred better than Todd Haynes himself, with his exquisite eye for capturing sensitivity and inner turmoil locking horns simultaneously.
Also, my jaw dropped to the ground when I heard Evan Rachel Wood’s opera voice. Wow, just wow!
HBO, you’ve done it again!
