greta gerwig ,, i call upon you because lena dunham's Star Power is getting weaker & weaker ,., i need you to finish her & take your rightful place as Queen of the 20 Something White People of New York
THERE'S NO CHEATING WHEN YOUR'E 18, YOU SHOULD ALL BE TOUCHING EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME
like Frances Ha on adderall, Baumbach goes the full Sturges for his lightest, funniest & most winning film. i was thinking that this Greenwich movie about a manic CU/Barnard student writer was hitting too close to home. and then they drove by my house.
MY FULL REVIEW ON TIME OUT: www.timeout.com/us/film/mistress-america
when greta walks down the steps on times square, she looks like an angel descending from heaven — i hope that’s what noah was going for
What makes MISTRESS AMERICA so good isn't Greta Gerwig the actress – though she is, as usual, quite delightful; it's Greta Gerwig the co-screenwriter. She and Baumbach had me the moment Lola Kirke's world-wise college roommate belittles her for thinking it might be a good idea to attend a new student "convocation," prompting Kirke's Tracy to reply, "How do you know all this?" Feeling like everybody else was handed a life manual and you got skipped is terrifying.

Brooke: What's going on in college?
Tracy: I don't know, everyone's really excited about this frozen yogurt machine at the student center.
B: I watched my mother die.
T: What?
B: I was with my mother while she died.
T: I don't know any dead people.
B: That's cool about the frozen yogurt machine. Everyone I love dies.
By FAR the funniest film I've seen in theaters in a very long time. The laughs are seriously CONSTANT!
Greta Gerwig was absolutely fantastic. I can't even begin to explain how hysterical she was. My favorite performance of the year thus far.
"I'm so embarrassed, I'm not a real person yet"
-Frances, "Frances Ha"
Suspended adolescence through economic restriction paints the Gerwig/Baumbach New York pictures as strong portraits of their time, but the curious thing about these two movies is a strand of optimism always punctures the melancholy of the situations involving these characters. When Frances Ha initially came out it was met with near unanimous twitter revelations that almost everyone my age (24) related to Frances in one way or another. "I'm not a real person yet", became less of a characteristic of Frances and more of a definition of a generation. She can't take money out of her ATM because the charge is too much and she wanders from house…
Won me over after a sceptical first reaction. Somehow it avoided whimsy and ended up with something obscurely moving, like On The Road for weird New York millennials. The device of the story is lovely and lyrical. Lovely.
I'm not sure already what my opinion of Mistress America is: I really enjoyed watching it and it definitely has that signature style of Baumbach in it, but I doubt this film will leave a similar impact on me personally compared to his other films. I could actually relate a bit with Greta Gerwig's character, but apart from that there weren't many characters in this film who I thought were interesting or exciting to follow. Definitely want to rewatch it another time to find out if this film works when I'm in another mood, since a lot of the jokes just didn't really land on me this time. Maybe I expected this film to be a bit more serious, because while I did think there were some funny moments I was focusing too much on the dramatic aspect of the film.
Very stylistically odd. Non naturalistic, (broad comedy, insane zig-zagging dialogue), but also feels like part of the mumblecore genre. But that makes it interesting and memorable. There's a strong current of poignancy and sweetness that ties the whole together.
“Then I’ll get so excited about something that the excitement overwhelms me and I can’t sleep or do anything. And I just am in love with everything but can’t figure out how to make myself work in the world.”
"I'm tired of running towards people i want to be the place that people come to."
I'm not exaggerating when i say this is the best written film of all time. The dialogue is so delightful and fast paced with the characters just constantly throwing the most iconic lines at each other...
There's a scene early on that's worth mentioning because it perfectly encapsulates their relationship and how differently they see the world : Tracy complaining to Brooke about being rejected from the biggest literary society on campus and the latter just casually answering "Why don't you create your own lit society?". From the get go you can sense Tracy's desire to be accepted, contrasting with Brookes's volatileness and what…
